Help a dummy - If I buy a UK iPhone will it work in Aus?

Hi Everyone.

I can pick up an iPhone in the UK in the next week and really want to but after reading the various threads I am totally confused as to whether or not it will work?

I have seen a few people in Australia with iPhones and assume it can be done however I feel there is a risk or uncertainity in trying to make an iPhone work here in Australia.

Is there a simple application that can be used?
Is it really risky to unlock an iPhone yourself?
Does anyone have experience in unlocking a UK iPhone?

Thanks everyone I look forward to hearing what people think on this matter. *If* I get one expect a report on unlocking a UK iPhone.

Cheers

999 Euros for an unlocked German iPhone. It's probably the way to go, despite the price if you are the "dummy" you label yourself. If you have to unlock with every update (and wait for new unlocks to work), you're not going to have a very "Apple" experience from your iPhone. Expensive though it may be, the German option is the only unlocked iPhone Apple will support for now, and then there's no guarantee they won't somehow "sense" at update that your iPhone is not on a German network and lock it.

Does this mean a German Tourist on an extended holiday in Australia
(indefinitely) would hypothetically have a problem using his/her phone
on this vacation? hmmmmmmm

hypothetically - i will be in Austria in January, oh the torture of being so close ....

EDIT: 999 Euros = AU$1677.80

Oh the pain of it ... Austria has announced they are selling iPhones same as Germany.

They will be selling them in 2008.
I will be there in January 2008. Oh the cruelty!!!!

----------------------------------------------------
T-Mobile brings iPhone after Austria

T-Mobile brings the Apple iPhone mobile after Austria: The official sales launch in Austria, according to T-Mobile 2008. The electrical retail chain Saturn was meanwhile on Monday, the first 50 iPhones in the trade.

As the group after several months of speculation was confirmed, T-Mobile Austria for a partnership agreement was signed.

Sales start for the iPhone at T-Mobile Austria is only 2008. "We will be the iPhone in the next year," announced T-Mobile-Φsterreich-Chef Robert Chvatal on Monday at the opening of the 2000th T-Mobile-Shops in Europe in Vienna Rotenturmstraίe.

Saturn prescht before
The Metro-electric chain Saturn had 50 entsperrte equipment from other countries on Monday already in the market.

Whether also competitors of T-Mobile Austria same approach will select, is still unclear. Apple itself provides only mobile operator with which to "special arrangements".

Entsperrte iPhones are however in several countries already available-for example, in France and since a few days in Germany. Without binding contract, however, the device is much more expensive. Saturn is the first iPhones in Austria sold at 999 euros to 600 euros more expensive than with contract in Germany.

OK, some more intel on the German legal jailbroken phones from Apple Insider
Quote:
Instead of receiving an unlock code over the phone or visiting a store, customers buy a standard €399 iPhone and choose to pay an extra €600 to unlock the device in iTunes. The software then reportedly compares the phone's IMEI, or its worldwide cellular identification number, to an Apple database which determines whether the phone can be unlocked -- giving the California firm final control over the process.

The whole process takes no more than 24 hours but can activate a fully unlocked phone within seconds, say anecdotal reports from early adopters contacting the fan site.
So you'd more than likely have to unlock the device in Germany, probably at a net cafe with iTunes on their computers. Then you might be OK forever more, or on update, Apple will sense you're back in Australia and lock your phone again.

Really, the whole iPhone thing is so Macroplop in its approach it makes Nokia look like a big, friendly giant. Actually, I love my 6070 on Telstra prepaid plus so much I probably wouldn't switch to an iPhone if somebody gave me an unlocked one with no obligations, but that's just me.
