It's even worse than that - on most carriers you can continue to use your mobile phones during taxi, and immediately after landing. Qantas is no exception - their 'welcome to xxx' spiel after touchdown during taxi to the terminal now includes "if your mobile phone is in reach you can now turn it on".

Worse still, even Qantas are trialling mobile phone use during flight. :-(

I wonder, though, whether in-flight iPhone Weather app use is considered roaming data by AT&T...

Most airlines now allow the use of phones inflight just not in take off or landing. And only if they have an inflight setting.
