Nice guide!

Do you guys think upgrading to 1.1.2 is worth the effort? I think I'll wait for the next big jump in features before bricking my phone and having to spend a day fixing it

Alphanumeric and shortcode SMS is reason enough for me. I'm just waiting for the new anySIM.

FW 1.1.2 is worth the upgrade but having to upgrade then downgrade. Does not sit well with me. I would rather wait for a path that works forward, not sideways.

Folks who have successfully upgraded are enjoying the perfomance increase.

Also one now can get notification of voicemail.

Myself having only one iPhone and the prospects of purchasing another are slim now with the new bootloader. I feel an iPhone properly working on older FW is a better option.

Current talk among the folks developing tools for iPhone. Mid Dec we should see tools avail for FW 1.1.2 that move forward safely.

It was WELL worth it for me. I now get SMSs when I have a voicemail, all my phonenumbers are in the +xx format which it now recognises. The main change is that the phone functionality works MUCH better if you are outside the US.

I agree, despite the pain and mucking about if your capable the new .1.2 is worth it simply for the message notification fix.

I do hate these baby steps apple is taking with the messaging shortfalls of the iphone. Its about the only flaw for me.

If you need the shortcode/flash SMS fix, then yes. But otherwise, the only advantage seem to be slightly better sound quality at higher volumes in the phone app. The rest of the changes? Take it or leave it, IMHO.

I did the upgrade in large part because I'm curious and a bit of a risk taker, and I've got a TurboSIM sitting in the cupboard. But in reality, the chance of bricking your phone with this update is no different to any update where new firmware is written (including within iTunes.) The only time I held my breath was watching the baseband get erased (with the new 04.02.13_G secpack in place) prior to reflashing the 03.14.08_G modem firmware, because I was running it on vt100 on the iPhone, and couldn't read whether or not it was successful.

This whole 1.1.2 update just takes a long time because of the ridiculously roundabout route it takes to get there. And I don't think all the steps are absolutely necessary, it's just the way I achieved it.

Yes I agreewith everyone else -

1.1.2 is a vital upgrade to get the voicemail thingy working.

However I also agree with w9cae and hope his comment 'Current talk among the folks developing tools for iPhone. Mid Dec we should see tools avail for FW 1.1.2 that move forward safely.' is true.

w9cae - please keep up as all up to date..

Cheers

Tony

After reading someone's post on Whirlpool, I decided to try out NetCode SMS again.

IT WORKS!

I am on 1.1.1 and for some reason, it works again! The last time I tried it (immediately after unlocking 1.1.1 upgraded from 1.0.2), it came through as a scrambled message with a message that didn't work/bad timestamp. Now it comes through EXACTLY as intended, with correct NetCode, from NetBank!

Excellent! (1.1.1 unlocked with anySIM).

I want the voicemail fix, but am willing to wait until such time as there's a less complex way of doing things. Just in case that never happens, I have acquired all the necessary files in any case, including having downloaded the 1.1.2 firmware almost as soon as it was available (just in case Apple sneaked in a baseband change or something)

EXCELLENT work! I was about to write something similar to that. I have been trying to upgrade to 1.1.2 for a few days now. I can confirm that your method works exactly like described and YES, the sim unlocking MUST be done with anySIM1.2u when you are in 1.0.2. It did not work for me either when I tried in a virginized 1.1.1 firmware even though it says it works in 1.1.1 also. I also ended up with a corrupted modem firmware. There are a couple of steps that you can omit though and bypass the 1.1.1 flashing if you can manage to install the OktoPrep in 1.0.2. I was stuck in that step for a very long time as the iPhone would lock in recovery mode and I didn't try to flash it twice as you did. So, what I did was to install the Installer.app for 1.0.2, then the OktoPrep and from there directly UPGRADE (NOT RESTORE as you mention) to 1.1.2. I can confirm this works 100% for me. To simplify the whole process a bit, STEPS 7 and 8 can be bypassed as long as you can install the OktoPrep in 1.0.2. I haven't found an easier way to install the OktoPrep other than the installer so this can also be simplified even more if anyone has more info about this.

REALLY great work there Edge!

PS: You may want to edit your post as there are two STEP 8s

Thank you

I am also on 1.1.1 unlocked with anySIM and just tested an SMS from an alphanumeric sender, - it kinda gets through, but part of the sender name is cut off and the message itself is gibberish. Progress, but not a fix.
