iPhone sending info back to Apple?? (apparently not.)

I personally don't, but anyhow, the spiel is on http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2007/11/12686/

Basically it states that it's sending information from Stocks and Weather. it sends the IMEI back to Apple... should we be paranoid?

Have your say

Doesn't really bother me. I mean, they know it is being unlocked and used worldwide anyway.

I'm only looking up stocks and weather

Doesnt bother me, I think its great market research for them to get an idea of who out there are using their phones and what they are doing.

If its going to help them understand the market place better, therefore bringing us devices more suited to what we want then they can track me all they like. Just dont read my email apple

I assume IMEI is the same as an IP being sent. Big deal!

It also sends the IMEI to the phone network all the time.

I don't really see the problem here... though it does allow the unique tracking of users, I don't think Apple cares enough to do so.

Yeah... let's make a lot of assumptions and see how far they take us...

Assume:
- Apple care enough to chase users who have hacked iPhones
- So they compile a list of IMEIs that have been sold, but haven't been registered and used on AT&T or networks of official Apple partners
- They then approach other telcos in other countries to compare their list of IMEIs with all the IMEIs being used on each network
- Then they end up with a list of phone users on unofficial telcos in countries like Aus

Then what?

Are they going to have us disconnected, giving the telco and Apple bad PR? Why would they do that? Why would the telco agree to work with them, only to lose customers?

It's a big deal, realistically they should announce they are taking this information if it is the case

You can't stand up for an organisation that takes your personal information without telling you prior - sounds like fanboyism to me

If apple want to do it, its fine, as long as they announce their intentions for using the information prior - even if you don't unlock the phone, you don't deserve to have what stocks you look up taken by your phone company

Imagine nokia downloading the information of what websites I use - Its the same thing and noone would put up with it - and rightly so

Not really. I would agree with you if it was personal data though.

I'm not sure you can visit a website without sending your IP address, or send mobile phone data without sending your IMEI (someone please correct me if I'm wrong about the IMEI).

I don't think this is a big deal at all.

"the IMEI is only used to identify the device, and has no permanent or semi-permanent relation to the subscriber"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMEI

Seems really, really harmless to me.

The IMEI is no more personally identifying than your IP address is. There's absolutely zero that can be done with it, realistically.

Quoted for agreement. If it were a microsoft device (or OS, or application) sending info back to Redmond without the users knowledge or consent, people would be outraged; and rightly so.

Quoted for agreement. Remember the outrage on these forums when it was found out that Apple were using your iTunes information to suggest similar songs in the mini-store? This is worse, yet hardly anyone cares?

Again, your IMEI is not personal information anymore than your IP address is. The Dashboard stock widget captures your IP address - where's the moral outrage over that?
