Looking at a new smartphone through Telstra!
Hi all,
I am wanting to get a new phone through Telstra (want the covergae plus there deals are the best for me too, although I have been tempted by Optus) to replace my one that has died (Nokia N70).
I am looking at the following phones:
Motorola Q9
Samsung i601 (Blackjack)
Palm Treo 750
Blackberry 8100
Blackberry 8800
I have been told in a week or 2 they will offer the Nokia N95 (I hope it is the new one with 8Gb) that I would be very intrested in if they get it.
Anyway I was wondering if you could all give me some feed back on these phones and what you think might be good.
I am looking at using the phone in the Darling Down area as this is where I am starting to do more work hence I would like Telstra coverage (that I currantly have) as I know it works ok out there.
I know that I can use some 3rd part software (that I did another post for) that would allow me to sync the Windows Mobile with the mac but I am unsure about the Blackberry? From what I have seen Windows Mobile 6 does a better job but I think most of the handsets are still coming with Windows Mobile 5, so wondering if that will cause me any issues?
I would like push to e-mail and also the phone to sync with my Contacts and calander with in Leopard. I wil eventually look at getting a Mac Pro laptop to go with my Mac Pro so I can do things on the go, so I am looking at the handset that will allow me to use it as a modem as well if possible for use with a laptop.
I can't think of mush else to say (I have typed quite a bit of gaff already lol) but I would love to here all your thoughts on what might be best for my situation.
Cheers....

Hi - I have the Samsung Black Jack - but be aware of the Telstra (i601) version. It doesnt have a front camera or Wifi. The Blackjack from vodafone and optus (i600v) has the front camera and wifi. I am pretty happy with it...........
Regards

Ok well I am now thinking of moving to Optus!
I have found a few things out (from some inside people I know) and I can say that I will get as good of coverge in the area I want to use the phone in as I would with Telstra.
On a side note I will bet money on Optus with I Phone and it will be in March 2008.
Anyway I am saying no more. lol
Because I am now looking at Optus the handsets on offer are diffrent to what I was looking at.
One handset I am intrested in is the Sony Ericcson P1i and was wondering if anyone here would know if there will be issues with Syning this phone on my Mac?
I know iSync so far says it is not supported but looking at the other Sony's on there I would say it would only be a matter of time?
I am still keen on the Nokia N95 but I have read that battrey life is a big problem. Does anyone here have the N95 by Nokia? And how do you find it?

To get the best coverage in the area you are talking about, you need a NextG phone. I was travelling in this area a couple of months ago. I was using my std GSM BlackBerry Pearl and he was using a NextG enabled Nokia 6120 (both on Telstra). He had heaps better coverage than myself, and the internet access is so much faster.
The number of NextG smartphones is currently limited to BlackJack and Treo750, but there is more coming.

If you're so sure, why not just wait till then? I'm also watching the French iPhone launch (Nov 29) to see if there's an unlocked version.

I actually have decided I will not get a i Phone yet as I know you will be paying for the thing no matter who gets it. Also I need a phone now and can't wait until then, and I will be happy to wait until next time to go for a i Phone (probably the next gen by then).

Well I think I know the handsets I will go with. It will be more a matter with whom.
I have decided that I will go back to my beloved Nokia and at present looking at a N95 from Optus.
I am also waiting to see the N81 (what looks good) and also to see who gets the new N95 8gb as I have been told Telstra will be getting a N95 phone with in a week or 2 but not sure if it will be the new 8gb version or the older N95.
With moving to the Nokia N series of phone is there any recommendations on how to get the most out of a Mac OS X and Nokia pairing?

Telstra is now stocking the N95 (ver3) but it is only offered in the business plans for $150.00 or personal plans on the $49.00 cap and $55 handset repayment (About $105.00 a month)!
I hope Telstra do not get the iPhone after this as it will be so expensive I feel through them. Anyway I am now really thinking of moving across to Optus what will change potentially what handset's I will for for now.
Looking at the handsets I can get through Optus it leaves me with the following what I think I like:
Nokia N95
Sony Ericsson W910i
HTC Touch (non 3g and the W910i might be as well not sure)
Sony Ericsson P1i
Nokia E65
With these handsets the P1i and the N95 I will have to pay $20 a month extra for on the plans I am looking at ($49.00 or $79.00 Business), and I am not sure if it is worth the extra cash. I guess it is also very much which of these handsets work best with a Apple as well. I was hoping now for some new insight since I am looking at changing carrier now.

Ok I have decided I will be moving across to Optus.
I now need to make my mind up about the handset I will get (tough decision).
I am looking now at these since I will be moving to Optus:
Nokia N95 (I really wanted this but am starting to think it is not worth the $$$ for me as I already have a GPS and all that)
Nokia N81
Sony Ericisson W910i
Sony Ericisson P1i
Nokia E65
From what I know the Nokia's will all sync fine and I can download software to allow the SE to sync.
Any thoughts?

Well with much stress and strain (never new getting a new mobile could be so darn painful) I ended up getting a HTC Touch through Optus. I am picking it up tomorrow, and I will have to now get that software that allows me to sync Windows Mobile 6 with OSX.
