iPhone woes

I'm seeking help, because I'm about to throw my iPhone against the wall.

I brought two iPhones, both with 1.1.1. Downgraded and activated using the iNdependence and AnySIM 1.1 method.

One works perfectly, no problems at all... the other... it's living on the edge...

Both made it through activation and jailbreaking, then one of them began to get narky with my WiFi network and would connect for a couple of seconds, but the moment you would try to use Safari or anything else, it would disconnect itself. I've followed all the advice on the web about making sure there isn't any IP clashes etc and I just can't get it to play nicely.

I thought that if I reset and restored it then went through the process again I might have luck, but all that I've managed to do it get an iPhone that I can jailbreak, but because I can't get a stable WiFi connection I can't install any apps on it or upgrade it from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1.

The one that I'm having trouble with also was 'frozen' on the Emergency Screen when I initially got the phone and you first turned it on but after the screen going dark into screen saver mode it would be all ok...

I am seriously at the point of chucking it out, except for the fact that it cost a pretty penny and that the working one is the 'her's', and the 'his's' it the rooted one.. and I want a working iPhone.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how to fix this?

(I'm not adverse to offering up a carton of beer for anyone who lives in Brisbane who can get this bloody thing working as well....)

Ooo beer

Ok, so it isnt activated yet? There may be a way to activate without a wireless connection...you need those files though (SSH, BSD etc.) before you can put anySIM on it so we need a way of getting them onto the phone.... Not sure if there is a non wifi way of doing that.

Try putting the phone right next to the wireless router so you are getting maximum strength? How many bars are you getting? Will the network show up and just not hold a connection? If so that is good, means it probably isnt hardware related.

I have also had issues with some routers, so if this fails, perhaps see if you can find another wireless connection to try it with.

the dark screen thing is normal for the jailbreakme method on an iphone, I'd suggest doing it the old fashioned way by downgrading to 1.0.2, downgrade baseband to 3.14 (1.02) and then revirginize - pre-111 patch using independence then upgrade to 1.1.1 and activate/jailbreak with independence.

It's activated and jailbroken in 1.0.2 (downgraded from 1.1.1)

I should have added that I thought it might have been the wireless connection (even though the other iPhone works perfectly anywhere on my block of land), but I've got a NetComm NB5Plus4W and when I had problems connecting to WiFi with that, I disabled the wireless then set up a wireless network with my Airport, same issues arose.

I get full strength (4 bars) anywhere in the house, and 2-3 bars outside, but still doesn't work anywhere...

The network always shows up, but won't hold a connection. I can't even look at the wireless settings because it disappears off the 'WiFi connections' screen (despite the fact that the wireless icon stays in at the top of the screen)...

Ok so your issue is that wireless inst working? Everything else is fine...it just wont hold a connection?

That is strange. You can download via GPRS but that might not be an option for you depending on your plan (I have a 300mb Virgin one so it doesnt bother me).

Your said the restore wouldnt work....perhaps a virginize and upgrade to 1.1.1? The two threads about how to do it without a computer have a fool proof method...but the problem is it relies a lot on the wireless network. You would have to hope that you can get a connection after you revirginize

Have you tried various wireless network options? ie. with no security (you could enable it when you're done).

Yes. Tried everything from no security to WPA2 and WEP... it connects immediately without delay, then within a couple of seconds the network is gone from the 'available networks' list, but still the wireless connection icon remains at the top of the screen (does that make sense).

You mean re:jail it and try it. Did that, and it didn't work that way either...

*sigh*

This is strange

It seems not to be a hardware issue since you can get the connection in the first place.

Perhaps try a revirginizing restore of your iPhone

This is a problem as all the revirginizing methods I've seen needs ftp at least to work to be able to access your phone and seeing as I can't get the wifi connected I can't do it... arrrgghhh! this thing is driving me insane!

Thats a real problem.

Dont quote me on this but there may be a glimmer of hope for you on the darkside. I could swear I remember reading something about an application for Windows that lets you browse your iPhone via USB like you do via SSH but without the need for Wifi.

I couldnt for the life of me remember where i saw it, but I am thinking maybe modmyiphone or macrumors

Good luck!

I may be totally wrong here but it sounds like it may be a problem from your airport end... I had the same with a powerbook ages ago, would connect to the network but drop out when i tried to do anything...

Deleting my network and starting from scratch helped. Maybe if you try that before you start on the iPhone end
