I have ssh installed.. but using independence I need the IP address of the phone to send the Terminal.app to it... I can't get the IP address.. that's the whole problem..

You may be able to guess the address, depending on router. 192.168.0.186 seems common.

Like I said, bite the bullet and try GPRS to get terminal from installer perhaps.
