iPhone not syncing contacts properly

Hi guys, back after a couple of big nights! I have noticed though I was getting text messages from unknown numbers, who were actually people who were supposed to be in my address book.

Recently I lost my address book in the Leopard clean install and bricked my iPhone the same day, losing all my contacts. I rebuit my address book and currently have 85 contacts in there.

After having to restore and redo my 1.0.2 iPhone, I synced etc. but now only have 43 contacts! They are all there in my address book, I am slecting to sync all contact from iTunes and replace exisiting ones on the phone...but they refuse to sync!

It is really annoying me because people are trying to call and I dont know who they are. Is this possibly a 1.0.2 + Leopard issue? Is there a way out there to fix this without having to type the 40+ missing contacts + missing details from existing contacts into the phone?

Thanks!

Hi, I have never used iSync in my life

I normally sync through iTunes, so tried a sync without sycning contacts then with it selected and no luck, tried restarting iPhone, address book etc etc.....this is a pain in the arse! Maybe it is a 1.0.2 + Leopard issue.....

iSync it still the front end for OS X's sync engine. So although you don't use iSync to sync your iPhone, iSync is the app you have to go to to reset your sync data.

I don't have an iPhone, but have encountered this with my Palm Treo 650. I sync using The Missing Sync, but when I've had sync issues I've had to go into iSync to reset my sync data.

To reset your sync history, launch iSync, go to the iSync menu, select "Preferences..." and then click the "Reset Sync History..." button.

Okay, after a search for my sync problem, I found this thread, and these instructions. Glad to see they worked for some, but they are not working for me, so I'm looking for others with similar experience or alternative solutions.

I have had the same problem syncing my iPhone ever since I got it, which means I've had it through 1.0.2, 1.1.1 and now 1.1.2. I'm trying to sync through iTunes on an iBook G4 running OS X version 10.4.11.

If I check the boxes for "replace information on this iPhone" during next sync, it will do that fine almost 100% of the time. But if I do a normal sync, I drop to a success rate of about 10%.

When I try, it shows the "Sync in Progress" screen. After about 2 mins, the light running across the slider freezes (often preceded by a couple of jumpy passes). Then a little progress wheel appears in the middle of the big green battery icon, and then that freezes. Then the phone gives a blip sound. Then after pausing a bit longer, it reboots itself, and the information has not been synced in either direction.

I've tried the suggestions above, resetting the sync history, then doing a "replace information on this iPhone" run first, and then adding a new contact and a new calendar entry on each of the Mac and the iPhone and trying a normal sync. The problem is still there.

If I ask it to sync just the address book or just the calendar, the success rate improves, but it is still not consistent. If I ask it to do both at once, it is more consistently bad, although it works occasionally.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Reading the posts here, it looks like some people are using iSync directly, but I don't know how to get it to recognise the iPhone, so I haven't tried that.

I was just putting up with working around it using the "replace information" sync, but now a friend has told me he is having the same problem, so I know it is not just me.

Thanks for any help that comes.

Nathan

Hey all,

Giving this thread a bump. I've had syncing issues with both Mac entered and iPhone entered data for some time. It has now gone completely belly up - anything entered on phone or Mac will NOT sync.

This applies to calendar and contact entries on both devices.

Music syncs fine.

I have a 1st gen iPhone, upgraded all the way to 2.0 - I have had this issue on and off since 1.1.3 though. Jailbroken and unlocked with Optus.

BlackBook 2.16ghz on 10.5.4 and iTunes 7.7 latest build.

I too have tried iSync, removing sync services (though I don't suggest you do this) and all other methods described on these threads in MacTalk.

Should I restore the phone? Start again? How WOULD I start again?

I've got all my important calendar and phone information backed up, so I'm not concerned about losing data, but without the sync perfoming correctly, the iPhone is rendering itself pretty useless to me!

Any advice appreciated.

OK - its not the phone - it must be something in my user account.

I created a new temporary user account, synced the phone (not the music as it wouldn't come across without me erasing the phone).

All contacts and iCals came across on first sync. VERY long backup on second sync, but contact and calendar changes on phone synced to OSX, and vice versa.

So something must be corrupt on my main user account yeah? Can I fix this, or should I get everything across to a new user account? Which would obviously be a massive pain....

OK, for anyone who's reading, for SOME reason, its now working. In all directions. Would love to know what changed, but hey, working, moving on.

No more upgrades until legit 3G iPhone arrives.
