Setting up GPRS on iPhone
Hi Folks,
I'm new to the forum and had my iPhone for less than a week. Loving it . I'm also fairly technically illiterate - one of those people who uses a Mac because I don't want to have to understand how it works.
What I'm looking for anyone who can help is a set by step tutorial for dummies on how to set up my phone to access GPRS.
I am using an iSIM sim card on the Optus network, and I am aware that using their GPRS service will cost me a bomb, but I'd like to set it up so I can access it occasionally when I don't have access to WiFi and really need something. I won't use it often, so I'd rather stay with the super-cheap iSIM call prices and put up with the occasional data expense.
I thought all I had to do was go to Settings > General > Network > EDGE, and enter an APN, a Username, and a Password. Other iSIM users have given me two different APNs and told me to leave the Username and Password blank, but both still leave me getting the "You are not subscribed to EDGE" message.
The iSIM Help people didn't freak out too much when I admitted to having an iPhone and sent me the following:
Quote:
I have had a look at a couple of phone settings for Nokia and Palm Trio and retrived the following information.
If your phone asks for a an Account Name this should be Optus Zoo which has a homepage of http://networker.optus.net.au/wap/index.wml
Under Access Point Name the Palm Trio says to call it internet however with the Nokias it actually says to select Proxy Address.
The Proxy address is 202.139.083.152
Proxy Port is 8070
If your phone asks for a Primary DNS field enter 202.139.124.225 and the Secondary DNS should be left blank.
If your phone askes for a Data Bearer select Packet data and the Packet data access point should be prepaidyesoptus
I hope that this information is of use for you.

There doesn't seem to be anywhere under EDGE settings to input most of that sort of info (even if I could work out what it all meant ), so I'm a bit lost.
Can anybody guide me through, from the beginning, in little baby steps?
Cheers,
Nathan

The other question of course, is if you drop your sim in another phone can you get online?

Perhaps that is where my problem lies. The ISIM FAQs suggest that it should all be ready to go, but I've followed the steps and it doesn't. I've also now tried conufsed's suggestion of dropping the SIM in my old Nokia phone, and it is not working there either. It didn't set up automatically, and after I entered all the data manually and tried to connect, it told me to "Subscribe to GPRS first".
I guess I was looking for the wrong problem and it is back to the iSIM help desk.
Thanks for the help.
Nathan

I had a similar problem a few weeks back. They ended up resetting my account for access and its been working since. I've just plugged in prepaidyesoptus and it works but in truth is so slow, I seriously wouldnt bother on the iphone. I checked in my isim account to see if i had been charged and I certainly had. 22c flagfall and 22c for 0seconds of internet browsing. Its too much.

The problem is all sorted, and I'm reporting the details in case anyone else runs into a similar problem. I contact the iSIM help team again and they replied:
Quote:
I have contacted Optus and asked them to check the settings and it would appear that not all apns were added to your service.
They have recitified this now and advised that you will need to turn your phone off then back on again. You may need to delete and then re-add the settings to your phone.
|
With that done, the settings described by Andrew Scott (asphotos) in this thread have got it all working.
Thanks for your help folks.

I'll even take HSDPA 3.6mbit if it means lower battery consumption. I don't need blazing fast internet, but I do want faster than dialup

And that begs the question - why apart from video streaming at the moment would such a high speed - I agree with decryption.
Either Apple couldn't get enough 3G chips or there were price issues, or the chips could not interface well with the iphone. I am aware power consumption was mentioned, but hey there are slim PDA's with 3G on board that can go 7 days without a charge.

no manafacturer is making the old 6280 chipset any more,.
they are all making the release 6 7.2mbps device's now days. (qualacom is a 7250).
speed wise, the network MAY not be able to provide the "speed" but the device is capable. just like hel$stra and its sameG promotion of free firmware for 7.2mbps, its a :"semi" upgrade.
all of the new devices on the market for xmas are 7.2mbps chipsett'ed.
you dont buy crt tv's anymore. though they show all the channels just as your plasma or LCD does..
you wouldnt buy a new car without airbags or abs these days (generally) even though the may not ever be needed.
why buy half a capable handset? i bet you have all sold your powerPC chipped macs and moved on (its the same)..
come on steve, the rest of the world wants a 3G device.

That did it! Thanks!!!!
I called up virgin to ask:
Me: Hi, I'd like to know what settings I need for internet on my phone.
Virgin: We can send them to you as an SMS if you'd like. What kind of phone do you have?
Me: Umm... I'd really like have them written down, just in case I need to set it up again.
Virgin: Ok. We can send them to you as an SMS and we can also send you a PDF via email. What kind of phone do you have?
Me: Ummm... err.... ahh... mmm... SonyEricsson k600i (my old phone). But I'm not using it right now. I might be later. Please send the email... then I'll go to your website and get the SMS sent... when I'm using my SonyEricsson again
So they sent me info for SonyEricsson... I guess my old phone could only do wap!
Has anyone called up and told the person on the end of the phone that they're using an iPhone?

yes, they don't care that you are using an iphone.. (well we dont anyway) the usual, its not supported, dont ask us how to make it better.
part of my task at work is problem solving vip issues (as such) one of Australia's biggest companies' cio's had troubles with his Iphone and getting it online and called his provider (us) for help
i reminded him it was unsupported, then fixed it for him..
