Buying 2 iPhone's from the US
Has anyone done this?
What is the deal with customs? I've had a look at their website and seems like they're onto it (from a pragmatic and webbased point of view).. but what's the real world experience??
I'm looking at getting two iPhones which would put the value above the $1000.. am i going to get stung with customs and duty??

Are you taking them yourself or are you shipping them over?
If the former, you might fly under the radar. If the latter, you're probably going to struggle. Then againb, USD 800 must be less than AUD 1000 by now?

US$800 is a lot less than AU$1000. I am having a friend bring back two iPhones from USA next week. I doubt there will be any problems if they are just coming back in your luggage.

Nah, I'd be buying it and having them shipped out here...
I was going to get 8Gb's at $489 US each... so they'll come in just under US$1000 which puts them beyond the $1000 AU that keeps it under the limit..
Unless anyone knows of somewhere in the US charging less for the 8Gb's...

Yeah - that $1000 sucks. Everything is over $1000 these days
Are your phones going to come together, as one parcel? Maybe you can avoid the duties/taxes if you order them a week apart or something? (No idea how it works)

Customs specifically state that if you have a few packages, from the same retailer/seller that arrives around the same time (they don't define what that time may be)... then they count it all together to calculate the duty...
Think it might be a case of send one to the in-laws...

If it's any help I can tell you that the limit is well policed for car parts. You'd be better off paying more freight and getting two packages separated by a week.

I'd go with shipping one to yourself and one to great aunty Gertrude.. Doubt there's any way customs would know it's the same order that way...

just set up another mailbox, or send one to a trusted friend just to hold the package for you.

I'll get mine sent to the house, my better half can have hers sent to her in-laws... that way if they take a shine to it, she can fight it out with them.. I'm safe!
I'm not sure if a week would be enough... I'm sure it'd pop up on their list pretty damned quickly if there was anything remotely similar about the packages...
For an extra $30 US postage, it's going to save a decent whack... will just go for the cheapest option..
