Said it before and I'll say it again - Telstra already offer two handset-classes with unlimited data plans. The hiptop2 and hiptop3 handsets, and all Blackberry phones come with specific hiptop/blackberry plans which include unlimited data.
An unlimited iPhone plan from Telstra isn't so farfetched.
Also, this is an interesting perspective but as stated in the article says, doesn't mean Telstra are going to be the carrier.

Oh.
I didn't know that. Well. That wouldn't be an issue, then.
I really hope they go with Telstra but its by no means a certainty.

And the other question is would Telstra if they are the carrier ? Will they give plans to iPhones that have been imported ?

You'd think there'd be almost zero chance of that.
If you have a hacked iPhone, why would you want to be on Telstra anyway?

Vodafone is not going to get the iPhone that is firm, and Apple as of 2 months ago, was only engaged in talks with Optus and Telstra with the emphasis on the latter.
That is the words spoken to me directly, from an individual very high up the Apple Australia hierarchy. Also, 'late 2008' was the word. Beyond that, I can only offer speculation.
I would have preferred vodafone myself.

I can wait, going to be a while before the software and gets really good anyway. And besides I would rather get a 3.5g one.

While it's fair to say that Australia and broadband have a fair way to go, mobile broadband is even worse off.
Considering the popularity of the iPhone, I'd expect the network to get a pretty big hit after it's release, especially with unlimited data plans. Yes the HipTop is out, but I think it's user base would be a drop in the ocean compared to iPhones.
Again, I can understand Apple wanting to ensure the network supports their product as best of possibl to give the best user experience, but it's sad when Australia end up getting such a shiny shiny product 1 - 2 years after it's initial release because of these issues.
If the word is late 2008, chances are it will be bumped a little later, so anyone who is due to update their phone handset now might as well, chances are you would be just about ready to upgrade again when it hits our shores :P

I have heard from a good source that Telstra is not getting iPhone. I have been told by another person Vodaphone is getting it.
I have no idea.
Apple are great marketing company. I feel they will go with a carrier that will fit this.
I have also found this about the UK getting there carrier that being O2: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=877
I think this is quite significant because if you read this artical it talks of a another partnership with another provider to offer Wi-Fi as the UK only has about 30% coverage on Edge.
I feel now that Vodaphone will not get it here because Vodaphone in the UK did not and they are very much the same company here. I think the carrier will come out of either Telstra or Optus.
Cheers...

As of two weeks ago all three companies were still in the running. Vodafone had taken themselves out but then changed their minds.

Does that mean the iPhone won't be 3G? As 3 isn't in the 'running'??
