Smile Advice please - using an iPhone in Australia ...

Hi,
Have purchased an iPhone from US - to be used in feature film and then to become Producer's own phone. Is it currently possible to use an iPhone on a network in Australia? I have looked at a few previous discussions along these lines, but as someone who knows very little about these things I would be eternally grateful if someone could advise what can or can't be done at the moment.
Thank you very much

The simple answer is: Yes, with some work the iPhone can do almost everything it can in the US (can't do visual voicemail).

If you'd like instructions or to follow other discussions, then there's an entire forum section dedicated to the iPhone and mobile phones.

http://forums.mactalk.com.au/iphone-mobile-phones/

Most things have been discussed in there at least once.

The short answer is yes, but the unlocking process is not for the faint of heart or those who aren't sure what they're doing. Having said that, many of the guides available around the internet are written in a fairly logical, step-by-step manner. If you're a Mac user, you'll probably find everything you need here. If you're a Windows user, a Google search will probably turn up the right guide for you.

Good luck!

Smile

Thank you for replies and helpful information.

Is there anyone in Adelaide who may be able to assist with getting the iPhone to work?

Thanks again, appreciated.

I'm in Adelaide and should be able to unlock the iPhone in question, either shoot me a pm, or reply in this thread.

Cheers
Colin.

Whilst yes there are "hack" and "activations" and "unlocking" methods...

I'd love to hear an Australian legal opinion as to how "legal" it all is.

As Marc noted, please refer to one of the threads on the front page to direct your specific query. Good luck.

[EDIT] DJY, some questions are better un-asked. Enjoy the blissful ignorance while it lasts

Yeah, don't ask.

I have lived or travelled overseas - can I use the telephone, modem, answering or facsimile machine that I purchased overseas in Australia?

If you have purchased a telecommunications product overseas (apart from a mobile phone), the product will not have the A-Tick mark on it and you should not connect it to a telecommunications network in Australia.

Only telecommunications products that carry the A-Tick mark should be connected to a telecommunications network in Australia. It is illegal to connect equipment that does not carry the A-Tick label and penalties can be imposed. If you connect equipment that is not labelled with the A-Tick mark to an Australian telecommunications network, and this equipment causes damage to the network, the Australian carrier may also seek financial compensation from you.

However...

A mobile phone (for personal use) may be brought into Australia and connected to a mobile telecommunications network provided the phone meets Australian standards. If you are travelling and plan to purchase a GSM mobile phone overseas, ACMA recommends that prior to departing from Australia you contact your mobile carrier to find out what mobile phones are suitable for use in Australia. Some features on certain models of mobile phones purchased overseas may not work on the Australian mobile networks. There are no labelling requirements for a mobile phone imported for personal use by this method.
It's quite possible and very likely that the iPhone DOES meet all the Aus standards.
