A couple of people have mentioned using their iPhone with an Alpine head unit. I imagine that is with the 'Alpine Full Speed Connection', so that you can control the phone through the head unit to change songs et cetera.

I have the same Alpine system running with my iPod Classic but wouldn't mind knowing a couple of things about how it works with an iPhone.

What happens when a call comes in? Does it come up on the phone like normal even though the head unit it controlling it? Or does it just either shit its self or disable phone use?

And does it charge the phone like it does with other ipods?

Cheers

I'm using the Kensington FM transmitter with my iPhone.

It says it won't work - it looks like it won't work - yet it works. However, you need a normal iPod to set it up as it doesn't have it's own lcd screen to set the frequency. Once done you plug it into the iPhone and it asks if you want to go into airplane mode or not - it's up to you - then it throws what looks like a mental and gives a weird screen with device attached or something. Press in the "tuner" button on the transmitter and it goes back to the ipod screen - now working.

However I'd prefer to have iPhone / car integration - something bluetooth for calls and something so that steering wheel can control the tunes.

I put a Alpine headunit with ipod connector into my car recently, plugged the iphone in everything worked a treat then I went to unplug the phone & found the screen white & the phone hot to touch. Iphone was cooked, I have since googled & found others have complained of this "hot iphone" issue, be VERY carefull as I believe many manufacturers have not sorted out the iphone intergration thing yet.

The THB Bury Range of car kits are great and just work. There is a bit of screwing around (nothing too difficult or any harder than any other wired car kit) wiring them in, but once they are in, they work perfect all of the time and if you change phones, it is a breeze.
Essentially there are two components - the base kit which is wired to the car / radio / antenna and the cradle.

I recently changed from a O2 XDA IIs to a Blackberry Curve and the transition was as simple of buying a new cradle, which are all interchangeable with the standard base kit.
I will ALWAYS use this product, as it is so simple and effective ( no - I don't work for them, but do spend lots of time in the car)

They now do one for the iPhone

Hmm, that looks like an awesome system. Does it also play music from the iPhone? How much would the whole setup cost?

Not sure if it plays music, but usually it is full integration.
I paid around $450 a few years ago. Try Point to Point Technologies at www.ptp.net.au

Just so people know - the TomTom 720 works perfectly with the iPhone for Bluetooth handsfree (as it acts as a car kit) including address book sync.

I'm using the new Belkin metal-slinky-arm bracket/fm tuner which comes with an iPod touch plastic bracket (which actually fits the iPhone perfectly - a little loose on the Touch). The iPhone complains it's not made for it but I just say no to turning it to airplane mode.

I do get FM/GSM blips in my speakers though (when on a call or when it is using GPRS)... I am gathering it could be designed around as I don't get the blips when it's not in the cradle - the FM transmitter seems to amplify and send them to my stereo when it is in the cradle.

Regards,
Shane.

Anyone tried the Xcarlink for the iphone?

Their website is: Xcarlink

Putting in Xcarlink into an ebay search delivers a few hits as well..

Love to know anyones first hand experience with one of these.

Also, where can one by an adapter cable that fits into the recessed headphone socket in the iphone?

thanks,
J

Ebay.

Ordered one from China on the weekend. $5.40 including delivery. I don't have high expectations for the quality, but it is a phone handsfree as well as being a headphone adaptor. Happy to update this when it arrives.
