my current one needs to have the iphone in aircraft mode before using it. its a pain, would like to use it as a handsfree as well.

Honestly, I think you'll have that problem with ALL FM transmitters. The same way you would if you put a normal phone close to an iPod running over an FM transmitter.

I used a lo-fi cassette -> minijack adaptor thing in my car. But the iPhone's headphone jack is too inset to use the adaptor, so I bought an iPod nano case called a "biscuit case" - because it's got a minijack extension lead that is about 2" long in the pack. Who knows why... but it's there and it solved my car audio problem.

Where'd you find that matie? I've looked around for ages for one of them.
Will report back to all about how my iPhone goes after I've installed the JVC head deck. I'ld say from the reports on here that it would work fine with the iPhone. ALso!! JVC Australia replied back to my email and told me it supports iPod Touch so it's a good sign.

It's just behind the steering wheel, so it's literally a strech of the finger to pause/play when the phone rings. I'm thinking of using the same set up when I eventually get an iPhone.

Yeah good point .. They didnt have any powered up that were on display, only about 50% of the ones on display were plugged into anything. Anyway it sounds pretty much like it'll work fine.
Now I've got to get an auto electrician or someone to get the bluddy factory radio out of my car. It's got those horrible newer locks that hold the radio in rather than good ol' screws, which need to be pried out with a special key. Bah!

Guys I just sold my car with a SE HCB-300 that worked ok with the iphone (dropped connection a bit). Anyway I need to buy a new car kit, fully integrated one for the new car (2000 Landrover).
Anyone know what top of the range brand car kits work flawlessly with the iphone?
p.s. one really important feature I need is the profile feature that the SE has so that I can touch a button and flick between it connecting to my iphone or my wifes SE phone.
Thanks

JVC Head unit didnt work with iPhone 1.1.2 .. Flashed "CHECK" in the display.. the iPhone detected the head unit and asked if I wanted to switch to airplane mode (either answer didn't stop CHECK flashing on the JVC). Grrr.
Edit: I exchanged the JVC for a $80 more expensive Pioneer head unit (I took the risk - the guy said he'd exchange it if necessary - and hey presto it works with the iPhone very nicely except for one really strange..bug?
iPod NOT playing when plugged in -> I get ERROR AO on the display of the Pioneer. Track FWD and REV work but no menus work.
iPod playing through iPhone speakers when plugged in -> All works fine. Menu structure good. iPhone happy.
Weird huh..

I've got the CDA-9887 and surprisingly it works perfectly with the iphone, which i wasn't expecting. I get the "this device isn't designed for the iphone" on the iphone but i just ignore it. All the track names / playlists etc all display on the headunit. I did manage to get it to crash last night though, i was flipping through something and my headunit gave me a "ERROR 01" - which a disconnect/reconnect fixed up.

For anyone whos interested I found the ERROR-AO message I was getting when I sometimes plugged the iPhone into my Pioneer head unit was actually because the Pioneer wasn't switched on and ready to send a sync signal or something the split second the iPhone was attached.
The workaround I found was to start the engine (so the Pioneer wouldn't turn off and I'ld have to unplug and replug the damn thing) first, then seat the iPod cable into the socket of the iPhone just at the point where you feel a bit of resistance and a spring motion in order for it to fully click into place momentarily. This makes the Pioneer beep and go into iPod mode - soon as you hear the beep you home the plug. READY appears on the Pioneer, and the iPhone makes its charging chirp and then prompts you to put it into Airplane mode, which I never do.
The downside is as usual that scrolling through large album/artist lists is a total bitch. The Pioneer doesn't even scroll through lists if you hold the down button down - you have to go hammer away at it til you get to the letter you want. I'm gonna have to set up some playlists to make the job of finding the music I like most easier. Thank god the iPhone only holds 8Gb and not 160Gb..

Yeah that sucks. On the alpine you can use the 1 - 6 numbers to jump through lists with ease. So if you press 3 you get thrown about half way down the current list. 5 will put you at around 75 or 80 % of the current list. Then you just scroll up and down with the jog wheel/vol control. The screen shows you 3 rows at a time which makes it much easier than the 1 line/8 char displays.

Yeah I have the same Alpine deck. I have found that it works better with the iPhone than my old 30Gb iPod. The scrolling with the iPod was a quite slow and it would get stuck on an artist or song every now and again.
No such probs with the iPhone, it will scroll through at full speed with no troubles at all.

Yeah its a 5g. I just found it was slow when using the volume knob to select songs/artists. If I scrolled too fast it would pause for a couple of seconds before moving on.
But as I said no probs with the iPhone
