iPhone firmware 1.1.1 released

1.1.1 may or may not brick your iPhone.

Though it was hoped Apple would only be targeting SIM unlockers, the update is confirmed to have broken all 3rd party applications installed via Installer.app. On our iPhone that had 3rd party applications installed (but was NOT unlocked), the update reverted the iPhone back to only Apple-made applications, and the iPhone re-activated itself after installation.
Probably a good idea to wait until a fix is found. It's a shame, since there are some interesting features added in this update:

- iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
- Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
- Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
- Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
- Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
- Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
- Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
- Support for TV Out
- Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
- New Passcode lock time intervals
- Adjustable alert volume

Apparently the iPod Touch has also had an update to its version 1.1.1, too.
It's claimed to provide only "Bug fixes", but it's 150MB of bug fixes!

Put Notes + the ability to add / edit in Calendar / Contacts and I'd buy one today!
I might buy one today anyway actually if I can find one!

I think I've decided to wait for an official local iPhone.

they did it well too by the looks, not bricking unlocked iphones but rather causing them to sim error which renders the phone part of the iPhone useless...

have to see what else turns up...

To my understanding, you don't need to download + apply the update and your iphone will still be unlocked right?

I just got one, and arriving on wednesday

Assuming your phone arrives with 1.0.x firmware and you've downloaded 1.0.2 firmware to your Mac already, you should be okay. Make sure you disconnect from the internet before first connecting your iPhone to your Mac, and make sure that iTunes hasn't secretly downloaded the 1.1.1 firmware before you connect.

Assuming your Mac / iTunes only has 1.0.2 firmware, and you're not connected to the internet, you should be able to connect your iPhone and unlock it using the existing 1.0.2 firmware methods. Just don't reconnect it to your Mac after unlocking until there is a 1.1.1 unlocking solution available.
