Apple sez: "We'll Brick Your iPhone"
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...nt_damage.html
Apple are getting very protective over their iPhones (and the contract with AT&T on each iPhone sold) and have said that a modded or hacked iPhone is no longer covered by warranty. Even though unlocking a mobile phone is not considered illegal in the USA, there is nothing to stop Apple refusing to support an unlocked device, and even going so far as to permanently blackban a modded phone, rendering it useless on any network.
If your iPhone is unlocked, it might be a very wise move to restore it to its original locked status before applying any new iPhone updates.

Being someone who used to play around with modded PSP's this doesn't surprise me and I was expecting it - didn't prevent me from purchasing my iPhone though.
Sony are a lot worse when it comes to firmware naziism imho

Just unlocked a second iPhone. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do it before the update.
No more updates for me.

I think this recent statement is just a scare tactic from Apple to make AT&T happy.
Moving forward I do have a feeling the iPhone software will relate to what country the phone was purchased.
Hackers may come up with a method to make a US model run the UK software etc.
But I do think once this new 1.1.1 is let out. The holes we have used to activate will be harder to find.
Also Apple has been using all of us with hacked iPhones for real world testing on many different networks. Which if they were to do would have cost them a fortune.
But dont expect Apple to be kind & offer us something for the system testing we have done.

One of the great things about the iPhone is the ability to add additional features via software updates (eg iTunes Wi-Fi Store). Guess a lot of unlockers will be missing out.

if it will come out.. since out law when it comes to mobile telephony differs to what's happening in USA and Europe.
And from what Apple is hinting, that a 3g model wont be out till end of next year..

I am not going to get mine til Friday
Chances are the update will be out by then. I am just really, really hoping that the iPhone comes out of the box with 1.0.2 installed and I don't need to do a restore (hence forced to update to 1.1.0) before I can unlock or I am in for a wait while a new hack is found.
Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to force the 1.0.2 firmware onto the device (which I have saved now) without using iTunes and needing to restore it to the new update?
What are the chances of Apple doing a MS on us and forcing the update secretly

Considering how protective they are over this issue -- as far Apple is concerned, it is more of an issue than people running OSX on non-Apple boxes -- it wouldn't suprise me if they do.
"We're going to fight this," said Steve.
