iPhone and number formatting
I've noticed something quirky on the iPhone.
When people call their numbers are normal 0404123456
When people sms their numbers have the country code +61404123456
With the US formatting this means that you can either have your numbers set-up for caller ID to work properly or for the SMS notification that pops up to work properly.
question?
For those of you who have changed the number formatting...
1. What format did you use?
2. Does it remove this quirk?

sadly you have to have both formats in the iPhone for it to recognise incoming SMS and incoming calls.
I assign both local and international numbers to my contacts and it then recognises sms and calls. A pain but there isnt another way around it at this stage
So yes you have to have bot 04XXXX and +614XXX beside each contact

Oh you poor, poor iPhone users! How you are made to suffer!
Seriously though, this does sound mildly annoying. If it get to be too much for you I know a couple of people that would swap phones.

Myself I have always saved my numbers in the +61 format.
I am wondering if Apple will have updated the software by the time my phone arrives.
Has anyone figured out how to put an old firmware in the phone ?

Ok here is a link to remove the () when your dialing or saving numbers..
http://rapidshare.com/files/55330128...ats.plist.html
you just have to then replace the file here
/System/Library/Frameworks/AddressBookUI.framework/ABPhoneFormats.plist
I am trying to find the solution for number formatting... having trouble with the part.
I know thats not specifically answering your question Quamen but i dont know if that exact issue has been solved yet.
EDIT: There is no fix at the moment. The only option is to have 2 numbers in your contacts to recognise SMS and calls but this is apparantly being fixed int he 1.03 iphone software update - just rumour though

I have done the AU number formating change to ABPhoneFormats.plist, it fixes the () issues but still does not fix the +614## and 04## issue linking to Address Book. SMS's sent to me recognise the sending from my address book, phone calls do not.

Solution
There is actually a temporary fix for the SMS notification problem that it only displays the international format of the number and doesn't identify the name from the address book.
Solution:
<!--This is to make the SMS appear from the person listed in the address book rather than being displayed in International Format and not being recognized-->
http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~simonk/...pport-8.tar.gz
Extract File: AppSupport
Location: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppSupport.framework/
*Thanks to Simon K for hosting the link*

There's now this option, which forces the iPhone to use the last 7/8/9 digits to match the incoming number to a contact.

Worked perfect. Since the rapidshare link above is not currently working, I found the number format file at:
http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~simonk/...eFormats.plist
