Just came home from a staff meeting at Dick Smith, where we watched the monthly Marketing Update DVD, from Head Office. They interviewed a guy who was introducing a range of new covers, skins and music docks for the iPhone. Doesn't give a firm date, but shows that retailers are starting to get ready for its imminent release.

If it's monthly does that mean this stuff will be for next month? If so I guess that's another one for June. Although given Apple's secrecy they could be guessing just like us.

I listen to AM radio, always talkback. Is that odd for a 16 year old?
This may seem a bit off topic, but how come there are no AM tuners in devices?

I believe it's to do with the way AM (amplitude modulation) must be received. An antenna would be hard to integrate into a device, compared with an FM one. Having both would use the most room, while having only FM uses the least room and easiest integration, while accommodating the largest number of people.
Oh, and yes, it is odd.

The FM aerial is part of the headphones you wear. This length of about 50cm is enough to pick up FM waves, but not long enough to pick up AM.

young people these days, you've never looked inside a transistor radio have you
An AM radio antenna is usually a Ferrite Rod wrapped in copper wire, or at least all the ones i've seen. So you technically could have one in your device but it would make it much, much bigger in most cases.
I looked on the DSE website the other day and there is already a number of iphone cases for sale. Question is, are the ones seen on the marketing DVD the same as those ones that appeared in this thread a few pages or so back (showing a slightlyl different iphone with a curved back)?
Oh, and no you aren't odd. Everyone's odd in some way or another though. Being 16 you might not realise that yet though!

When we've got digital radio both AM and FM will go and all stations will be digital. So you'll be able to listen to AM again on any new radios that wouldn't have normally included it.

Wow - it'll be weird to hear AM content in digital audio quality.

Shock jocks in all their, um, glory.
There's no way there would be digital radio in the new iPhone so there isn't much point in speculating. But, getting a little off track. When this becomes common it would be awesome to have integration into your phone/ipod. Have your phone know what song is playing on the radio, then one press to buy it on iTunes.

Yeah, that's stuff that's being sent out to stores now, so it will be up, out on shelves and available for June. I highly doubt that Dick Smith has any information on the release that anybody else lacks - they're simply using their intuition
