I can track my current spending on Vodafone, I barely use it though since I'm on a cap.

appleinsider report this o'nite
Telecom exec says 3G iPhone to support 42Mbps HSPA
A senior executive for Australia's Telstra wireless carrier has allegedly told the region's ChannelNews that Apple's upcoming iPhone revision will be capable of supporting an advanced 3G connection at speeds of 42 megabits per second.
"We know what is coming, we have seen the new device and it will be available on our network as soon as it is launched in the USA," the unidentified executive is reported to have said. "By Xmas this phone will be capable of 42mbs which will make it faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world."
The report goes on to say that Telstra already has 3G iPhones on hand for testing and that the device will be made available to the carrier's customers "very soon after its June 9 unveiling" by Apple chief executive Steve Jobs at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
If true, the claim by the unnamed Telstra exec would suggest that Apple is building a wireless broadband chip into its next-gen iPhone that supports an advanced High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) protocol known as Evolved HSPA. In addition to downloads of up to 42 Mbps, Evolved HSPA networks also supports uploads at up to 22 Mbps.
Stateside, AT&T is putting the finishing touches on its own standard HSPA network that currently offers download speeds of 1.4 Mbps and upload rates around 800 Kbps. However, the US carrier promises to follow through on a plan that will boost download speeds to 7.2Mbps in the next year, eventually hitting 20Mbps sometime in 2009.
*edit* - which is actually a reference to this article on Thurs - apologies if it's already been noted

Whilst the whole 42 mbs is just Telstra propaganda... is looks like their theoretical speeds of NextG (but I didn't think they were hitting that for a couple of years yet)! I thought they were aiming for 21 mbs by this Christmas?!?!?
The GREAT news for me - that I have been hanging out for is that, yes someone at Telstra has spoken, and YES they will get the iPhone on NextG (no big surprises there though), but it will be VERY SOON after it's USA release!
WOOHOO

I'd be ecstatic if we even just had HSDPA. Have a look at this graph that someone on MacRumors made. Note that there are also 1.8Mb levels for HSDPA and HSUPA, as well as the 3.6, 7.2, etc. That means that the slowest HSDPA would be very nicely comparable to ADSL speeds.
Edit: Optus must have 7.2mbps/2Mbps. Very nice.

Telstra Execs Claims 42Mbps iPhone
Well this is an interesting little bit of info from Gizmodo -
Telstra Execs Claims 42Mbps iPhone, He Is Probably Just Wrong [IPhone]
Quote:
A Telstra—iPhone's carrier in Australia—senior executive, has declared that "by Xmas (the iPhone) will be capable of 42Mbps, which will make it faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world." While Telstra's network may reach that speed in 2009, his claim seems nothing but hot air and kangaroo dung, for a long list of reasons, starting with the iPhone's alleged baseband chip—the Infineon's S-GOLD3, which tops at 7.2Mbps.
The 3G baseband chip most likely to be in the iPhone 3G is the Infineon S-Gold 3.
• The iPhone beta firmware code specifically mentions the Infineon S-GOLD 3.
• There have been multiple press and analysts reports about Infineon getting the contract for the next version, continuing its relationship with Apple—right now the iPhone uses the Infineon S-GOLD 2 as its baseband chip.
The S-GOLD 3 tops at 7.2Mbps.
S-GOLD 3 Multimode - HSDPA, WCDMA, E-GPRS Baseband IC with embedded multimedia functions; launch in the market Q3 2007 HSDPA 7.2Mbps, WCDMA 384kbps class UL/DL & EDGE multislot class 12, including SAIC/DARP support
There are no 14.4Mbps baseband chips available in the market now, much less when the iPhone development started
• In fact, there are no HDSPA-based mobile devices of any kind supporting more than 7.2Mbps at this point, and even those are still not common.
So yes, the network supports the devices, but most likely—and unless there were five million supersecret 42Mbps baseband chips that nobody knows about, hidden in an subaquatic lair in the Pacific—the iPhone 3G, already well into production ahead of its June 9 launch, will not support those speeds.
Maybe the unnamed Telstra senior executive is implying that, next Xmas, Apple will introduce an iPhone with a radically redesigned motherboard—thanks to a supersecret baseband chip that nobody knows about right now. Or maybe it's something else.
I'll take Kangaroo dung for $500.

Just heard a third-hand rumour, that allegedly originated with someone at Apple Australia. The story I got was that Apple would only be officially partnering with Vodafone and Optus in Australia. I understood that both companies will have specific iPhones plans, but am not sure that was the content of the original conversation from whence this rumour came.
I also got the impression that it isn't clear whether the phones will be locked or unlocked. My source was suggesting that the iPhone would only be available on Vodafone or Optus, but it may be that only these carriers will be selling them.

Yeah specific iPhone plans are the clincher.... because data charges on Optus at least are going to hurt otherwise!
