If Apple really thought this way there would be no new Macs since the introduction of the DVD-RW drive. There are countless Apple revisions that are simply minor speed and/or storage bumps, so why should the iPhone be any different?

But this is Apple we are talking about it. If they thought that way we'd still be using floppy discs. They like to be ahead of the game.

You have a very valid point
I suppose they do quite frequently bring out the same unit (see. Computers) with faster processor and what not
What I was more pertaining to was perhaps the communications band they would utilize - but I suppose they may upgrade in favour of a less power hungry chipset in the future....

Yeah but remember even the 3G enable switch screenshot was a mockup
Geotagging can be done with Skyhook as well using just data triangulation
It could just be a feature bolt on

The 3G on/off was confirmed:
'Enable 3G' Setting in iPhone Firmware NOT Fake - Mac Rumors
So no mockup there

The Telstra story is something I have been waiting for!
Whilst I don't believe the article - in that 42mbs is their propaganda about NextG speeds... Apple won't put the chip in the first one.
The good news is though a Telstra exec is saying, YES we are getting it on NextG soon after the USA release!
WOOHOO!

I never thought I'd say this, but if Telstra announce they're getting the iPhone and it's HSDPA, I will be mighty tempted. That is of course also assuming that the plans are competitive.
I'm a little conflicted though. I'm currently with Three, and I like the facility of being able to track my bill via the internet to make sure I don't overspend.
Do any other carriers do live billing to track monthly expenditure?
In any case, it's very exciting that the iPhone is no more then a few weeks away. I'm sure I'm not going to be the only one rushing out to get one as soon as they're out.

Rumour has it that we may be looking at HSUPA, so I think every network should have HSDPA at least.

I think I might have spotted a major flaw in your wishful thought:

I believe Telstra can do this as well - as I think I check partial bills on line as well!

Not only that but there isn't even a chipset yet that supports half that speed let alone 42MBPs...
It is nothing but marketing drivel from Telstra....one day yes...but for the next couple of years Telstra's theoretical speeds will not be matched by the slow mobile chipsets.
In addition the CPU/processing power on these mobile devices couldn't cope with such speeds even if the chipset could theoretically support it...
