lol, maybe when optus have enough hate for telstra, they will hack their edge network and supply it to optus customers for free.

You will need to recharge using turbocharge with a minimum of $50 and then set the iphone up using the instructions below
On your iPhone, go to (1) settings (2) general (3) Network (4) Edge (5) Next to APN type in the word Internet.
Now you can access the internet using you Optus data plan you have already purchased without the need for wi-fi

I got sick of all the talk about a 3G variation and ended just getting an 8Gb iPhone from EasyMobiles.
It was free on a plan so I figure the reality of a 2G iPhone in the hand is better than the idea of a 3G one...
Now I have one I'm more than happy and can't see that the 3G variation will be much better.

Call me a crazy skeptic but I spy with my little eye a marketing ploy. First post and "iphone on a plan easymobiles" kinda give it away.

I can't believe how cynical people are these days.
If I was going to buy an iPhone I'[d heartily recommend purchasing it with the easy finance available from, um, who the hell is paying me to spam forums these days? Oh yeah, www.easygullible.com.au

I just rang optus because I was confussed about my 14 page bill for 9 calls and the computer said when it misunderstood me - "so you're calling about an Apple iPhone." It's like they are teasing - we wont tell you when we are releasing it but we'll add it to the voice recognition and response system.

David Richards is claiming that a senior Telstra exec has said that the 3G iPhone will be nextG compatible and delivering speeds of 42Mbps by year's end.
OZ 3G iPhone To Be Fastest In The World - Channel News
If this were reported anywhere else this would be big news. As it is, I'd take it with a HUGE grain of salt.

This isn't as much bullshit as it sounds.
Telstra's NextG network is the best HSPA network in the world, it's also the fastest. There are many devices with chipset support for the faster variants of HSPA, no doubt the iPhone will get a chip that supports it. It just happens to be that Telstra have the only network in the world that supports those speeds - meaning Australia has the fastest iPhone.
Telstra isn't getting a special iPhone, Telstra's network just happens to be able to support that feature of the iPhone, where as no-one else in the world can.

I doubt Apple will put in a 42mbps chip in the iPhone, why waste money on a chip only one carrier, in one (small) market, in the world, can use? Especially since 1 second of data transfer would cost $20 on a Telstra plan. Considering Apple has only used EDGE up till now, I wouldn't be surprised if the first 3G iPhone stuck to 3.6mbps.

Look at the bigger picture. AT&T are rolling out the same 850MHz 3G that Telstra use for their Next G Network. Not such a silly move as far as Apple may be concerned as that is still their primary market (USA). It's more to do with what the network is capable of. HSDPA is a standard as such. Interesting times ahead

But it's not 42mbps. There's no reason for Apple to plan that far ahead, they'll just have a new phone for when 42mbps networks exist.

Also consider that Apple's strategy is for maximum coverage as far as device and service amalgamation is concerned
They will want people to be able to utilize their iTunes download facility on the iPhone and that means acceptable download speeds as far as the public is concerned.
Existing HSDPA speeds are sufficient but they may want to make the device have the longest shelf life as possible.
We should not expect a yearly refresh as apple have already pulled out their aces from their proverbial sleeve with the 3G device
What other revolutionary technology (see. hardware) can they put into their devices while remaining true to their minimalist design and product lineup theory?
I'd say they will want this device to last - a high speed chipset is very feasible I would say.
They've acknowledged the technologically savvy contingent of users through their addition of support for exchange in firmware 2.0
I'd say that they are recognising the need to cater for specialist needs in adjunct to the majority's needs.

i agree, i think that apple will possibly hold out, and then tout it as a feature in the next revision. "Look, now its even faster. And boom, its like having broadband everywhere!"
