just because it is cheaper than the other (rip off) merchants doesn't make it right.
if at&t can give unlimited data for $21 then aust carriers should be able to do much better than the equivalent of $100 a GB or $250 a GB in telstra's case. That's about 20 to 100 times more expensive than ADSL data. There is no justification for that.

Not to mention I think we have the most expensive sms rates in the world..
AT&T raised it 5cents in March.. and its only just now at 20cent a text.
(It's getting closer to what we pay now, but still, we have been paying heaps more for years)

Australia is an absolute rip off when it comes to mobile and data charges. In our South African office users pay R1/MB (AU10c/MB) and their mobile call charges are the same. The charges for 3G and GPRS were identical.
What I fail to understand is why GPRS should be so ridiculously overpriced compared to 3G?

Because GPRS and EDGE are packet-switched data layers implemented over a circuit-switched voice network core. UMTS was designed from the ground up to be optimised for data.

Yeah, but the infrastructure is already there, whereas for 3G they had to build it, therefore 3G should have been more expensive because you were paying for the new equipment. What it looks like is that the GPRS users were paying for the 3G development costs and then not getting any rebates back on it now that the developments have been made.

Or perhaps the cost to build and maintain both 3G and 2G infrastructure is shouldered by voice revenue and data is the cream on top? Fact is that it costs less per-kb to transmit data on 3G than it does on 2.5G.

I have no doubt about that, but Telstra used to charge $22/MB for GPRS which is ludicrous.
