lol, why are you anti-GPS? Seeing as cost should be minimal and battery life is a non-issue if you aren't going to use it. (You WILL end up trying it, then liking it anyway though. )

I won't be able to afford or need an iPhone but it will be cool when they are released here.

There has been rumours of Apple diversifying it's mobile lineup, perhaps Apple could have a phone with GPS and a Phone without, then everyone's happy.

No, I wont. I'm one of those people who knows how to get from point A to point B in any city in the world after spending 10 minutes with a map of that city.

GPS isn't just for getting from point A to B; in conjunction with Google Maps it can be used to, for instance, find the nearest sushi restaurant, then call them, surf to their website etc with one tap.
This functionality is already in the iPhone and iPod touch, only they use wi-fi hotspot and cell tower triangulation rather than true GPS (which aren't as effective in Oz).

So, how long did it take your friends to convince you to try the internet? I'm sure postal mail was fast enough and email unnecessary

Thats something I found very very handy when I was in Hawaii. Looking up the nearest gas station or Apple Store and getting step by step directions. Its fantastic!

No, because I've never needed it In my own city I know my way around really well, and I don't go to other cities that often. Having said that, I was considering a move to Melbourne recently and was planning to purchase a GPS. I thought that I would only end up using it for a month until I knew where I was going and then it'd go in the cupboard or on eBay. Not moving to Melbourne now, at this stage..

GPS would be fantastic - I'd love to increase the accuracy of the Google Maps feature in the iPhone!

I used a GPS unit before. I found it more of a nascence than a help. All I want from a phone is good talk time and easy SMS.

I think I need to clarify my article regarding GPS.
As someone else has already said, Apple aren't going to include bullshit bloatware for speaking directions etc. If they do include a GPS chip it will be for exact location for use within Google Maps only.
I still see it as unlikely. My reasons;
*Unless the chip is constantly switched on (which it wouldn't be, or else bye bye battery), it will take forever to locate satellites every time you wanted to use locate me - that's not Apples style.
*It will add expense and without a carrier model, Apple will want to keep hardware costs down as much as possible.
*They seemed far too dedicated to their current system with cell phone and WiFi triangluation, remember they talked a lot about how Skyhook or whoever were expanding their mapping for this purpose.
*Battery life. This is really important to them. Fair enough, GPS units have a decent battery life, but that is their sole purpose, add contant 3G data use, mobile phone roaming and the multimedia aspect of the phone and your battery isn't going to go very far.
I would love to see it, but I don't expect it and don't want it to mean they will compromise things like battery life.
As for the TV tuner rumours - load of shit, will never happen, full stop.

Plus free data access over the satellite connection wouldn't suck. Getting stock, currency and weather updates without affecting your data usage would be great (should Apple allow us to do this).

And have you seen the size of the satellite-phone antennas?
