Well, if the top model is $500US, then $700 isn't screwing us too much more than usual. If that was half when subsidised I'd be pretty happy. Who am I kidding, I'd pay anything!

$1k would be a psychological barrier for the non fan-boy types, I'd think. I think it wont be over that unlocked when it does come out here.

Taken from 3G iPhone with GPS, Video Conferencing, TV? - Mac Rumors
3G iPhone with GPS, Video Conferencing, TV?
Tuesday May 13, 2008 10:02 AM EST; Category: iPhone
Written by Arnold Kim
LeMatin.ch (French) reports that based on a source in Swisscom, Switzerland will be getting the iPhone this summer.
By itself, this news is not that surprising, as there have been a growing number of reports of the iPhone being delivered internationally in the coming months. Unique to this source, however, is the report that the iPhone would come with GPS, Video Conferencing and Mobile TV functionality.
GPS and video conferencing (with front-sided camera) have both been rumored for the next generation iPhone, but the addition of mobile television is new.

I see we've entered the "improbable feature" phase of iPhone rumormongering. Much earlier than last time, too. In turn, this will spawn the "bah, it doesn't even have..." backlash when it's released and it's just a revision of the existing product with a speed bump.

The iPhone won't have mobile TV, it's just not how Apple does TV. It's the same reason the Apple TV doesn't have a tuner.

QFT.
DVB-H sucks monkey balls. It's about as popular as a kick in the gonads from an angry horse. A quick search shows that Nokia have been the main promotion pin up for the service and they have admitted that it's not taking off.
Apple would have to pay a lot to get to use it... and the advantages of having it are so weak that I just can't see them doing it. As per the article I linked - 12 deployments worldwide of the service, 3 of them in Italy.

Meh. I don't think many people care too much about mobile TV. If it has 3G and GPS, and at least 16GB (which we know it will), then sold. If there's no GPS I'll have to hope a good bluetooth accessory comes out (in which case it could drain its own battery and not the iPhone's).
Besides, isn't mobile TV like $5 per month per channel here? That's better spent on data IMO.

When I heard mobileTV my first thought was simply TV out so you can use the iphone to to play content on most screens. I don't think TV is really relevant with wireless broadband since there are so many competitive and free services on the net.

Hmmm, that raises the question of whether the iPhone will (or already does?) have an extended headphone jack with an extra ring for composite video?

Forgive me if I'm missing something here, but why are people so keen on GPS? Why do people have such a need for it? Most of my daily driving is from home to work and back. At weekends I go to the city, visit friends and family. I generally know where I'm going. On the rare occasion I have to drive somewhere I haven't been before I use a street directory.
Two years ago no one had GPS and they survived. Now it seems no one can drive without one. Personally I don't give a fiddlers if the iphone has GPS. I don't need my phone to tell me when to turn left or right.
Please enlighten me to the needs of GPS.

I think people are getting GPS terms confused. I bloody hope the new iPhone does not have the stupid pile of shit GPS software that reads out directions built in. I hate those damn devices. If you think need a GPS for your daily commute, you're an idiot.
But, I don't mind if it has a GPS chip in it, so it can pin point your location better than the 'Locate Me' option.

Optus has recently changed their Wireless Broadband pages to remove information about using one's 3G phone as a modem. Nevertheless, it still works for me. I'm not sure whether it is still possible to have those plans attached to a mobile phone account. If not, although it may still be technically possible to use a Wireless Broadband SIM in a mobile phone, I wouldn't like to see the bill for any calls made (since they would not be on a plan of any kind.)

It's hard to argue with this. I won't try because I agree, although I will say that the WebKit based browser found in the N95 is usable which puts it a long way ahead of the other options (excluding the iPhone.)
