At least the advantage will be, that if we go on a 24 month contract, that the warranty can be extended to cover the whole contract period. Not like the usual deal with phones nowadays which are just 12 months.

I'm on a 12 month (should be 24, someone screwed up) Vodafone contract but I have no way of telling if it's locked and I never bothered to ask (I just assumed it was). Any way to tell without popping another SIM in?

You could try entering your IMEI at http://vodafone.com.au/unlock and see whether it says one way or the other.

I was just going on the fact that my old phone was locked even though I was on a 24 month contract.

Our records show that your handset with IMEI Number: *removed* shouldn't be locked to the Vodafone network.
|
Guess they don't lock

I was with Vodafone on a 24 month contract a couple of years ago and my handset wasn't locked. I can also tell you for a fact that Optus does not lock postpaid handsets.

So we can confirm that Virgin, Optus, Telstra and Vodafone don't lock theirs then.

This is all news to me, I was under the impression everyone was still locking their phones.

Sure, but I don't think you're going to see any carrier offering a prepaid network locked iPhone. Not for a while, anyway.

True, though AT&T did it with GoPhone plans. It's not something that would fly *here* fortunately.

Even taking all this into account, the deal made with the carriers may require the phone to be locked. That seems unlikely at this point however.
