So Macrumors are reporting thatthe 3G iPhone may be a May release. Although I doubt it I have had something intriguing happen.
I ordered 2 x 16GB iPhones from PriceUSA for some friends two weeks ago, just before she stopped taking orders for them. Anyhow she has not had any reply about them from her supplier and Apple. Today Carolina emailed me to let me know that her agent has been told by Apple that the phones should ship this week. This is even though the Apple Store lists the iPhone as unavailable.
The people who I am buying for are happy to get 2G iPhones so that is not an issue, but it does seem weird that they get a shipping notice when they are unavailable.

I should add, that technically, once the 3G iphones come out, be aware that if you're on 3, you won't really be able to use 2g in the 3 zones. Just keep it on 3G mode at all times :P

i have an HTC Kaiser - nightly recharges (sometimes twice daily) is not uncommon
charging once a day would be a-ok in my books
back on the iPhone topic though...
has anyone heard more information (or disproving information/rumours) of apples intention to potentially use OLED screen technology in the new device?
i recall reading something about in reaction to energy consumption and how OLED can potentially remedy this

I'm fine with charging once a day, I'll probably treat my iPhone the same way I treat my iPod touch and just connect it each night to sync and leave it to charge over night, it gets me through a day of Uni with Web Browsing, about 3-4 hours of podcasts and maybe half an hour of video with Wi-Fi on all the time. The iPhone probably won't get me all this but if I turn off Wi-Fi and watch less video and maybe lower the brightness of the screen (I leave it on full) then I can probably squeeze out a day of use before charging.

Had a call from the optus business people on friday about what a grand loyal customer I am. They offered me an upgrade to an N95 and I said "no thanks, I'm actually waiting for the iPhone" the very excitable indian call centre man said "no problem, i'll just put in your account notes to call you back when the iPhone comes in"
Nice!

Wow, you must have a sucky battery. My TyTN II lasts 3-4 days between charges.

i have HSDPA and Push mail on 24/7 due to the nature of the work i do
if i was to leave it on all day and receive 80 emails but make no calls, i'm left with 54% battery.
back on topic
everyone just needs to remember that the existing market for data consumption is reasonably poor in australia due to the market maturity and handset range availability
cue in a product which is easy to use and targeted for mainstream and not a niche, and carriers are going to re-assess their stance on affordability for the mass market
we are going to see some very competitive pricing structures upon launch (as we did when the hiptop was launched - see 'all you can eat' plan specifically for that product)

I have a Palm Treo 750 (WM6), and I have the same battery problem, basically if i charge my phone before I go out on a saturday night, by 5am it's dead. And the phone is only 2 months old.
Regarding the data plans, i'm not sure what to expect, possibly $50 for 5GB (which both networks currently offer)? As the hiptop plan uses EDGE which probably costs Telstra a lot less than if it were using 3G, also browsing on the hiptop runs through a proxy server which changes the website so that it looks normal on a hiptop screen, and it also trims down the size of it so you use less data.
You get free unlimited mobile browsing on BlackBerrys too but only through the BlackBerry browser which also cuts down the size of websites so you use less data.

While I do think that there will be new and better plans announced for the iphone there is, IMO, no chance that we'll see an unlimited data plan like they have in america and europe. The emphasis is just not there for mobile data in this country, it's too big a leap. You certainly can't compare unlimited data on the hiptop to unlimited data on an iphone, the hiptop is the net stripped down a huge amount, you really CAN'T use more than a few hundred meg a month with that device (believe me I tried), so it's safe to offer 'unlimited' (12gb in reality), however with 3g speeds, almost full desktop style net browsing, and a youtube client, you could conceivably eat up many gigs over a month, and networks here just aren't ready to swallow that on a large scale, at any sort of affordable price.

I'd be interested to see what their reaction would have been if you had said 'N8321 (fake) to come in'. i wouldn't be surprised to if he said "no problem, i'll just put in your account notes to call you back when the N8321 comes in".
With regard to data plans It would be fine if they just brought their plans up to the level of 3. Optus and Vodafone have kind of OK mobile broadband, but not that you can use on a phone. Once the iPhone is released they might just offer similar plans for the iPhone. 3 already offers 1gb and 2gb plans and as far as I know are the only ones to offer phone plans in the gigabytes.

CNet Australia has an unconfirmed report that Telstra will be the third carrier to sell the iPhone from the end of June.
Link.

Call 1300 300 937 and say "mobile". The automated voice says "Are you calling about the apple iPhone?"

It won't be tied to multiple carriers from what we know so why the hell are these companies saying they have "deals". That's great work that you can supply an iPhone but I think I'll just buy from Apple unlocked.

Just saw the report on Gizmodo.

This really is in line with the rumours we heard from the Australian MacTalk forums last month, where it would be across multiple carriers and available from Apple resellers.

 Decryption!
