due to the popularity of such a device, this can only be good for local data pricing structures
see a very competitive marketplace for data plans in the near future folks

I think its safe to say at this point in time that the iphone will have 3G. Now the speculation is pretty much whether it will have things like GPS

3G is a given.
3+ carriers is almost certain.
Design/Features are unknown.

Mmm, I hope it's just a matter of buying the iPhone outright from the Apple store and then choosing what carrier/plan to go with. That would mean going to Apple first then the carrier.. or the carrier will sell them and Apple won't sell them directly (which I can't see Apple letting them do) and sign you up on the spot. It is going to be a lot of work for Apple to sell them and do the network sign up there too... Either way, it's going to be exciting going down to the new Sydney store to get it..

has anyone heard any rumours regarding the iphone on 3?
looking at their blackberry plan ( BlackBerry 8707g - BlackBerry Mobile Phones - Three Australia ) makes me think they would be a pretty perfect carrier for the iphone.

Hmm, this is interesting. From this article discussing the expansion of the Optus network:
Quote:
|
Apple's iPhone would work well on the 900 MHz spectrum, according to Mr Krishnapallai. He declined to comment whether Optus will be selling the popular handset.
|
The current iPhone does support 900MHz on GSM, but according to the press release the network expansion - which is what the spokesperson was discussing - is going to be achieved by using 900MHz HSPA, a 3G technology.
So have Optus unintentionally outed the 3G iPhone as supporting 900MHz?

And is it just me or is 3 the only carrier with decent data plans? Other telcos have good data plans for mobile broadband for a laptop etc. but none of their phone plans have decent data.
EDIT: Wait, nevermind, they have good data on that blackberry plan but that's it. I can't find any other phones with data included in the plan, or any sim-only plans with that much data.
EDIT Again: I found X-Series - Pricing, which isn't too bad. You can just attach these to a regular plan at $12 for 100mb, $20 for 500, $30 for 1gb and $40 for 2gb. If the iPhone isn't on Three but unlocked I'd seriously consider just getting a $29 cap (sim only, no contract) with the 1gb Data plan which would be $59 a month (or $69 for an extra gb of data), not bad really. Actually, if it's still locked and Vodafone has no comparable data plans I'll probably just unlock it and do that anyway. I think I've found the perfect 3G iPhone plan (for me anyway, I would mainly use data, not that much calling, smsing etc.). I wouldn't go with the $12 plan, the excess data is cheaper (12c/mb for the 100mb plan, 10c/mb for the excess data.
PS: How the HELL do they expect normal people to figure this out? Although I guess normal people don't give a crap about data plans.

yeah, that seems like a good avenue, although I was really hoping they would basically replicate that blackberry plan, and throw a free iphone at me. I certainly think that unless someone else is offering 1gb upwards I'll be going your route and bolting on an x-series pack to a 3 voice plan

I guess the question now is, which carrier/s (if any) will support visual voicemail? And will they consider it enough of a differentiator to bother?
