Jun, I suspect your brother had a GSM only mobile phone. These will not work in Japan.
|
Ah, good news to be sure. So a 3G phone is the way to go then? If the new iPhone is indeed 3G perhaps I'll see if it will work in Japan. If not somebody back in Oz will get a nice present!
Yes, I suppose he did. Forgive my ignorance of all things tech, I'm not as technologically minded as may seem! When in Japan I don't pay any attention to such things.

No problem. The Japanese mobile phone networks don't exactly give the impression that they are now compatible with most of the world but in fact they now are and it was largely at NTTs initiative. They are far too used to running their own pseudo monopoly/oligopoly.
Of course, AU (KDDI) is still doing its own thing.

however, it seems other carriers are pissed that vodafone got their news out first.
so this is the first official confirmation that 2 carriers will sell the iPhone concurrently in the same country.
interesting that they use the "later this year" line too.

Always gonna be TIM that got the rights to the iPhone. They pretty much have the whole mobile market over there. Vodafone and Wind Mobile play second and third fiddle.

Not sure if there's any particularly exciting info here, or info that hasn't already been given, but I work for Vodafone Customer Care, and this was the internal memo we were given yesterday:
Quote:
Vodafone today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten of its markets around the globe. Later this year, Vodafone customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will be able to purchase the iPhone for use on the Vodafone network.
We're obviously enormously pleased to be included in the agreement to sell the iPhone to our customers later this year.
The iPhone will be the perfect addition to Vodafone Australias mobile handset range and its Australian launch is well-timed to coincide with our plans to deliver an enhanced mobile internet and entertainment experience to our customers.
The iPhone has already proved to be extremely popular with customers in other parts of the world and we're very confident that todays announcement will be well received by all Australians who are keen to get their hands on their own iPhone. We'll keep everyone posted on shipment dates and further details relating to this exciting news as we come closer to our official launch.
|
I'll let you know if any more info comes to hand, but it'll likely be leaked elsewhere before we even get it!

as others have pointed out, vodaphone and optus are moving to 900MHz for thier faster Same G equivelent, i didnt realise one of the Nokias supported this band but i know there are currently very few phones and no USB modems that do.
i guess we can expect the iPhone to support it given that Vodaphone are one of the carriers and the product is new.

I hope Apple will utilizes multi carriers.... As vodafone have crap coverage in Tasmania, and currently no 3G network... Unfortunately Telstra is our only 3G option, but its all we've got.... Fingers crossed.

Last year AT&T store employees were not allowed to take vacation between June 15 and July 15, in preparation for the June 29 iPhone launch.
Well, AT&T have notified staff of their vacation blackout dates for this year: June 15 to July 15. Seems to lend credence to the June 27th launch date that's been floating around.
