Don't Optus and Vodafone use the same network? It's sounding VERY likely we're looking at a worldwide 3G release with normal carrier agreements and available unlocked versions, it explains all the news about carriers ahead of WWDC (Rogers, Optus,Vodafone, T-Mobile in Austria), the MacTalk story and most other rumours. It also explains all these carriers reluctance to talk about the model (3G, GPRS), and a date. It also explains how all of a sudden all these countries have deals, Apple must have passed on the revenue sharing to get a carrier.

Also, I noticed at the end of the article they said expect it at the end of the year. Does this mean we can rule out a June release and see it at the end of the year?
Like decryption said, I doubt that Australia would get such a product before the US... Just doesn't seem right. Who knows!

It doesn't say "at the end of the year", it says "Later this year".

This article: Vodafone Australia claims iPhone coup - Mobile Phones has someone that makes a good point:
Quote:
Gartner research director Robin Simpson said the Vodafone announcement "lends some weight to the assumption that Apple is moving away from its single operator model".
"If Vodafone had exclusive access, they would be trumpeting it. It looks like Vodafone has made a pre-emptive strike for public relations kudos. I would expect that we'll be hearing from other Australian and Asian operators with a 'me too' in the next 12 to 24 hours."

Woops, read that way too fast. I guess I just registered that later this year meant a little while from now

It's probably just meant to create uncertainty because Apple wants to say the date. Rogers said exactly the same thing in their announcement for Canada, they also didn't say exactly the same things.
I'd say June is likely, but they just can't say that yet, technically June IS later this year.

I left three and went to Vodafone when I bought my iPhone. At least I won't have to swap carriers again.

Nice! I just hope the stuff about no carrier lock in is true. Vodafone are just announcing that they have 10 markets lined up, it's a big announcement and worth doing a press release for (10 countries with iPhones, stock market's gotta love that).
We should see some local announcements soon I reckon

There is so much confusion on when and where the iPhone will be released here in Australia. I wish Apple would just settle this once and for all. I guess first they need to first look after North America then Europe then maybe us. The demand for a 3G iPhone in Europe will be huge. I believe North America does not have a 3G network as advanced as ours? Hopefully it is no to long after it is announced that we get it in Australia.

It says here it is exclusive to Vodafone
jeloz

Vodafone has scored a massive coup by
reaching an agreement with Apple to
sell the iPhone exclusively in Australia
and ten other markets around the
world.
Later this year Vodafone customers
in Australia, the Czech Republic,
Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal,-
New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey
will only be able to purchase the iPhone
through the Vodafone network.

That's just a typically ignorant journo talking, Jeloz. If it was exclusive, vodafone would have said so, which they most clearly do not on their website.....
