9 to 5 Mac at least gives up a little love:

Perhaps that story a month ago about all of Australia's resellers getting the iPhone was true as well.
Aussies get 3G iPhone choice | 9 to 5 Mac

edit: Ars Technica now cites cnet's story as confirmation of MacTalk's. (can't link as there's no cut and paste on iPhone yet)

CNET is reporting that Optus has emerged as *one of the* providers for the iphone.

iPhone for Optus, not exclusively - News - Mobile Phones

More rumors. Oh the fun!

Speaking with a friend who works for Vodafone just a few minutes ago, I asked if he had heard anything about the iPhone. He told me that he has heard from within Vodafone that the iPhone will cost around $800.00 when it is first released in Australia.

Surely they can't expect anyone to pay that much for a mobile phone?

I would because calling it a phone is somewhat misleading, it's all the pieces working together that I want it for. What's the buzzword - "convergence".

$800.00 sounds about right. (I'm not saying that it's not a high price but it is about what I expected).

Ok, since you put it that way. I guess to me it's just a phone that plays music, like a Nokia.

$800 would be a bargain!
Compared to the cost of other smart phones, $800 is a bit below average for an outright phone with no contract.

Yeah, yeah I know you're half right but I think that the new 3g iphone is the point at which the touch and the iphone will start to differentiate in feature set and form. I don't see the touch ever getting a camera on the front (at least not for a while) but I could see the iphone with one.

Not sure how a plan fits into that price... should be interesting to see what 'bargains' our phone companies dream up while rubbing their hands together. One good thing should be the amount of competition in pricing which so far other countries haven't had.
