More speculation but seems to fit, and CNET dont usually post rumours unless they are fairly certain
iPhone for Optus, not exclusively - News - Mobile Phones
Optus saying they will be selling the iphone last week of June (wont be exclusive to them though)
Would tie in nicely with the George Street store opening...

You know, if Apple is allowing 'resellers' to sell their products... that could probably include other stores that sell iPods and things... kmart, myer... whatever. This could also lead to them being available straight through mobile carrier shops (like telstra, optus, etc.. stores). If these stores can stock the iPhone then I'm sure that we might end up with deals where you pay off your iPhone monthly or get it included in a contract. Even if the iPhone was $1000+ that's cheaper than many high-end mobiles in the market today. Could be interesting, especially if that Optus story is true.

How long has Telstra Phonezone been selling iTunes cards? Just out of curiosity. Saw them on display at Forest Hill this evening.

The original story on here was just as credible for me (in fact probably more so), and is why I joined up to this forum. For me this just confirms what has been posted on here before.
Everything at this stage is rumour - i guess all we can do is use our own judgement on what seems realistic and what isnt.

Yeah, I wasn't having a go at you mate, sorry if it came out that way. It's just frustrating as hell to see happen, and it must be twice as frustrating for Anthony.

CNET says they have an insider that confirms iPhone will be released at first for Optus but not exclusively and the iPhone to go on sale on the last week of June...

I've noticed that it really does seem MacTalk was probably the first in the world to break news that the 3G iPhone at the end of June would be with any carrier. Ever since out story that was discredited as bullshit by a bunch of arrogant journalists who felt their turf had been invaded, there has been heaps of other rumours coming out about an unlocked phone from other countries.
I think there is one part of that Cnet article that is BS...I don't think Optus will be announcing anything mid-May, not without Apple's approval. I would love to eat my hat though....
I have to strong feeling that the iPhone will be unlocked in the USA as well and I am very suprised the mainstream Mac media didn't read between the lines of the recent rumor that AT&T will be subsidising the iPhone. Do you thin they would do that for generousity? No way, it means it isn't exclusive to them anymore and in order to keep customers they need to do something to set themselves apart...
