Damn this is really hard. I can pull the trigger on an iPhone next week, but the iPhone almost certainly gets updated on its anniversary (June) when the SDK comes out.
Do I care about 3G? Not really. And then there's the matter of selling my older iPods.
But as time goes on its getting less and less likely we'll see an iPhone here. We're probably under the Asia umbrella and Apple aren't there yet.

I'm going to bite the bullet and order an iPhone next week. 3G doesn't mean anything to me. The amount of data I'd be downloading would be minimal anyway, so it makes no difference if the phone is 3G or not.

you don't get warranty for purchasing iPhones right now do you? Like ones you get unlocked from Australia.
What happens if something stuffs up on the hardware side of a unlocked iPhone bought here?

You have an iBrick.
Some vendors offer a hardware warranty of sorts, but this involves you re-virginizing your phone and the vendor sending it back.

I think I did the right thing by getting an 8GB Touch, I can then use that till the 3G iPhone comes out..
Folks keep in mind that 3G isn't just about data speeds (As much as I'd look forward to hsdpa speeds for youtube ) Consider this facet.. if Apple was to make an iChat app for the iphone/touch.. and there was a 2nd camera on the iphone (facing the user), see where I'm going with this?

yeh the warranty and lack of 3G was my reason for getting the 8GB Touch when it came out instead of an iPhone.
Now my V3i is getting old and boring but the iPhone still hasn't come out after 9 months wait
Getting impatient! lol

Yep this is me. Except if you had been in the States just before Macworld, bought the iTouch instead, and had proceeded to kick yourself for not buying an iPhone in the interim.

Telstra will be initially the exclusive provider of 3G iPhone in Australia, as I'm betting it (3G iPhone) will be like the Sony Ericsson K850i - HSDPA 850/900/2100 to make it compatible with any 3G network worldwide.
As the Telstra is the only network with a network in the 850mhz range, they will be the preferred carrier, as was AT&T in the US.

Actually, I've been saying this for nearly a year now, since the iPhone was first announced

that he has... but then they also have their own 'music store' set up now.....
thats gonna screw up the deal!
unless they drop the music store and put it under the itunes banner for all of telstra.... or something like that.
on the one hand - they have the 850mhz range
on the other hand - they have their own music store that will clash with Apples intentions for the iPhone
i think im just going to buy one

does anyone actually know a single australian who has bought music from bigpondmusic? i certainly don't. For that matter anyone ever downloaded a movie from bigpondmovies? didn't think so either.
if Telstra could pull their head out of their ar$e for 2 minutes they would realise that not only is it going to be an uphill battle to get any traction with bpmusic but it is going to cost them millions to get probably nowhere.
I think their best bet is not to fight apple but to join them. They would make far more money by closing their bigponddownload businesses and selling itunes content with a small commission from apple.

I don't know anyone that buys Microsoft DRM'd crap from Bigpond Music, nor movies.
As for working with Apple - thats what I love about iiNet as my broadband provider! Downloads from the iTunes store don't count towards my quota
I'd love it if Virgin became the carrier of choice - some of the best value data plans, good coverage and they are more "hip" than their network provider Optus (I don't care how many instrument-playing elephants they have, nor how melodic their Lions are).
Regards,
Shane.

Don't all the carriers have their little music stores?
Three: Three - Discover 3 - Music
Telstra: BigPond Music Downloads
Vodafone: Music News - Vodafone Music
and Optus: welcome to Optus Zoo
So either way, one of the carriers will have to ditch the music store... I'm hoping for brand spanking new exclusive plans for the iPhone, no matter the carrier, as long as there's unlimited data
