I was wondering if the temps on istats is correct on penryns. As when im in bootcamp "coretemp" reports idles of around 45c (its hot in victoria at the moment) where as istats reports about 50c while idle in leopard.

The thing is this post AnandTech - Penryn Temperature Software Discussion [update]

says coretemp cant read penryns and displays about 10c higher than it should be ? yet coretemp is displaying similar temps to istats.

So.. is istats reading it correct or no?

I can't really say either way. We dont read the temperatures directly from the cpu like some apps do. We get them from the system management controller in intel macs using a reversed engineered api. We really have no idea if what that tells us is correct or not.

Ok thanks for the reply, i'll make some idle comparisons between istats and realtemp(in bootcamp) and report back.

Ok these are my findings. for penryn and temps

idling in osx at about 4% cpu average istats reads 53c
idling in xp pro about 1% cpu average realtemps reads 42c

ambient room temp = 27c


can anyone with a non penryn mac see if theres 10c difference for them ?
