Default Can Touch This - Episode 5 - Can't Touch This

cantouchthis_3001

I was stuck with a Blackberry Bold for the recording of this episode, hence, I don't really talk about any iPhone apps. I do include a look into the app scenario on the Blackberry OS though. It aint' pretty. Rubbing in the that fact I am iPhoneless this week is Gavin (mrbrut), Marc (marc), Dan (zillatron), Shawn (the gaffer guy). I am*Anthony (decryption). These are the apps everyone chose:

iFighter - Rating: 4/5
BeBot - Rating: 4/5
Lonely Planet Melbourne - Rating: 3/5
Nova FM Live - Rating: 3/5
Twitterberry - Rating: 4/5 for a Blackberry App. 1/5 when compared to iPhone.
Excuse Generator Pro - Rating: 1/5
MMS Buddy - Rating: 0/5
Pickin Sticks - Rating: 3/5

Quite interesting hearing what the Blackberry app distribution model is like. Having used Symbian/S60 phones prior to getting my iPhone, I actually found I had that same "app fatigue" that Decryption was talking about too.

For me it was a combination of phone restrictions (my last phone was a Nokia N80 which had an odd resolution compared to the majority of the newer ones), plus the general lack of spit-shine on the best applications too, but the biggest killer was the poor discoverability of new ones, which I think is where the App Store really shines

I had 'tiny-scrolling-text-menu-fatigue' just watching him use the thing!

That's exactly it - there's just a stream of poor quality apps. Sure, they work, but they're not exactly interesting or engaging beyond "HOLY SHIT MY WORK SAID I NEED THIS SO I BETTER INSTALL IT".

The App Store is just more fun - the fact there's so many apps, so many good apps, is something I think not many companies will be able to catch up with.

That said, App World for the Blackberry is coming soon - that may entice more devs to make stuff for the BB. Don't forget, there's more App World capable phones out there than iPhones right now, so there's a big market for those who can make awesome BB apps.

Still listening to the podcast...

I can out-do Shawn's most expensive app.
I've bought the LogMeIn Ignition App. It's worth AU$36.99

For me it's been useful to be able to remotely login to my computers at home, and some friends computers to help them out with fixing stuff.

Not useful for most people, but I found it really useful.

Didn't know this existed. I've been considering buying Jaadu VNC for remote access. Any thoughts on Jaadu VNC vs LogMeIn Ignition?

I use LogMeIn on computers I need to be able to access... So I'm not sure whether it's better or worse.

I don't think Jaadu VNC will connect to a computer that is shared by LogMeIn (It doesn't say anywhere on the iTunes Store Page that it can). They just claim that it's better.

Might be of interest: Twin Cobra
YouTube - ??????/Twin Cobra (Arcade) Loop 1&4 Stage 1

Great game! Could be played 2 player co-op, although the video above seems to be two guys on separate machines playing in sync.

Just a quick question...

I noticed there wasn't any meta data/image during the podcast when you discussed an app in this episode. (Feature I love)

Was that because anthony isn't on his mac this week?

Yep - you can't do it easily on Windows. It requires some stupid scripting app that I couldn't get to work
