To assign keywords or checkmarks:
Select the photo or photos you want to add a keyword or checkmark to.
Choose Window > Show Keywords.
Click the checkmark or one or more keywords you want assigned to the photo.
To deselect a keyword or a checkmark, just click it again.
You can also add keywords to a photo by choosing View > Keywords, and then selecting the photo and typing a keyword into the keywords field just below it. Move your pointer over the photo to show “Add keyword” in the empty field.
To stop viewing the keywords, choose View > Keywords again.

Does anybody ever bother reading the help files before posting? The help files really are, well...helpful. You can even add your own keyboard shortcuts to keywords...
When you play around with it you find out that the there is a lot you can do with keywords and easily.
