Default Gmail now does PUSH! The Death of Mobile Me?

Google has finally switched on Push email today. shame it is 2 weeks after renewing my MM as that's pretty much the only thing I used it for.

So who's dumping MM now when their next renewal comes up? Find My Iphone is the only other feature worthwhile to me and even that is very flaky.

I'll still be uing MM but not for mail push anymore. Hope this works for Google Apps too.

Great news

I use most of MobileMe's features.
I love the integration with the iLife apps and the account (for now) is my iWork.com account which I use for some work documents.
File sharing large files for clients with iDisc is great
I'm sure there are ways and means of doing that for free, but it's the simplicity of integration I love.

I set it up this morning. Took a while for it to do it's first sync (hint... don't choose more than a week if you have hundreds of emails, and do it over wifi). then doing tests with my partner, the emails weren't going through instantly at first, but after a while it was virtually instantaneous.

Re Google vs MM, well find my iphone is nice in theory but in practicality I'd love to see stats on who actually uses it more than a few times, and if a phone gets stolen or something if it actually gets recovered. We heard that one story of a phone getting recovered shortly after it's release, but I have a strange feeling that may have been a publicity stunt But hey if it makes you sleep better at night, shell out the cash.

If you could have multiple Exchange accounts on the iphone then I would dump MM for sure, but until then I'll keep with MM.

Anyone getting a drafts folder now? There doesn't seem to be a way to set the iPhone's draft folder to the Drafts folder on Gmail.

If Google offer online storage and back-to-my-mac kind of functionalities? I'd consider removing MobileMe.. but to be honest? as I'm using the email for my out-of-hours business, I don't mind paying under $100 per year for what I get with M.M.

One exchange account is the killer for me. Stupid IT people won't allow anything but Blackberries to use their precious exchange system. Stupid....

That is a bit silly considering they need to maintain a whole other server just to interface with the exchange. They're just putting more work on themselves, not to mention the cost of licenses for each handset is hefty!

Does anyone know why there is a limit of only one Exchange account?

The iPhone has been like this from day 1 of exchange support. This is something that'll have to be fixed/addressed by Apple.

I have had google mail on my iPhone for what seems like forever as well as push for smail calendar. Switching to this just meant turning on mail in the account setup for the calendar, then deleting the old sperate gmail mail account settings (since it was now redundant).

Worked first time near instantly, so pretty happy with that.

The reality though is that this is just one of my email accounts and since the others don't support push it's either set to fetch automatically every xx minutes or as it is now, set to manual so I check when I want to. In my case I am in the office most of the day with the Laptop checking the mail so don't really need it on the iPhone.

Depending on how things go I might just move back to the old way of things with seperate mail and calendar accounts. I need/want my calendar up to date so having all new appointments pushed through is a good thing, however beeping everytime I get a piece of mail isn't a priority since it will show up on the laptop not long after. Outside of work I don't care so much.

It's a shame there isn't a little setting that allows you to set schedules (like the Blackberry) so you can say push everything to me 8 am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, but outside that don't bother me. Would be very nice if you could do that on a per account basis too... Am I asking for too much?

You need to set it up again as an "Exchange" account.

Nope. You need to setup your gmail as an exchange account (Go to add new account) then delete your old Gmail account on the iphone. google has posted instructions so check out their website

Amen to that. I've wanted Gmail push for decades * 10^-1 but iPhone doesn't support multiple exchange accounts so I can't get rid of MM. Fucking apple.
