Default WTF iPhone OS 3.1 or iTunes 9 screwed up

Has anyone else noticed different behaviour in their music library on the iPhone since 3.1 firmware came out.

I have not changed my iTunes library on the MBP, simply updated to v9.

The below image shows a sample album as seen in iTunes v9
Click the image to open in full size.

The below image shows the same sample album as seen in "albums" mode on the iPhone "iPod" app.
Click the image to open in full size.

NOTE: What should be seen as a single album because all the tags are the same in iTunes is now being seen as multiple albums because although the "album" tags are all the same the "artist" is different.

This means my album view which I use a lot is now 4 times longer as I have many multi-artist albums.

Anyone?

Also after a sync has finished and you go into "iPod" on the phone straight after you see this message "Library updating this may take a few minutes".

Never seen that before now.

klif, When you display 'Album Artist' (not just 'Artist') for say that Lauryn Hill album what does it show?

If they are different, change them to just Lauryn Hill. That might fix the problem.

Not a very elegant solution when you consider that some people actually like to have accurate metadata on their songs

I wonder if prior to Syncing you need to arrange your iTunes by album instead of Artist, or Album Artist, in order for it to transfer over properly?

I have all mine sorted by album and don't have this problem in my iPhone - and my library definitely includes a lot of "artist ft. other artist" naming conventions.

Album Artist is empty for those offending albums.

I regularly change the sort order of those play lists and it has never had any effect in the past.

Are these from the iTunes Store or CD rip. You may simply have not tagged the Album Artist tag. If you click the CD and get info, this tag is not visible. You have to select all the tracks, get info and tag it there.

The solution is to move the featured artists into the song tile and make all the Artist tags Lauryn Hill. I wrote a post on this ages ago, which goes into it in some depth.

The point behind my post is that the behaviour has changed between
iPhone 3.0 -> 3.1 and iTunes 8.x -> 9.x

I wasn't meaning to start a debate or discussion on correct meta data for tracks within your iTunes library.

I had this problem too in my library even prior to iTunes 9. The solution is to populate the Album Artist field, then resync.

Exactly, that was quite clear from the title: "WTF iPhone OS 3.1 or iTunes 9 screwed up"

No. The solution is to put Lauren Hill as the Album Artist. That way the album will have correct artist and title and it will still be grouped as one artist.

I just changed the Album Artist to "Various Artists" and kept the same artist for each song, and it keeps the album organized as one and will give you the correct metadata when it comes to actual artist.

hi there i have recently upgraded to 3.1 and found that all my podcasts are now in some random order (not sorted by release dates) and real jerky when scrolling through the main podcast list but not in the sub menus, i'm thinking it has something to do with the iphone update

fr05ty

edit: i should say its a black 32gb 3gs

Yeah, I have the same problem with the multiple albums for one album when it has different artists. Such as a movie soundtrack.

The main issue is that it didn't happen before I updated my iPhone to version 3.1. The same music I had on there with the same albums would not come up multiple times. It's just plain damn annoying. Apparently they realise it's a problem and will fix it in the next patch.

Why should I waste my time messing around changing all my multiple artist albums to copy in "Various Artists"

How damn hard is it to test stuff out. I am sick of my windows laptop and was almost about to buy a macbook. Now I see that Apple is picking up Microsoft's bad habits. Apple always used to thoroughly test there stuff.

I just want something that works. Is it that hard to ask? (Sorry for my little rant I haven't had my morning coffee)

completely agree, i'm very meticulous with the tags and now they are all out of order since either os3.1 or itunes9.0. i have plenty of compilations which came up in the albums of my iphone as separarte entries. but this only happened with certain albums.

FIX: enter properties of tracks (get info) and select Yes for part of compilation, this then groups the albums with different artist names together under the same album.

however, the sorting on my playlists is still whack, yet to work this out...
and the live updating seems to be a bit delayed too... not sure what's going on here either.

anyways it's completely screwed up how I've been operating for the last 4 years with itunes...

As FLI35 said - this album is technically a compilation. Select all tracks, get info on all of them, and tick to say it's part of a compilation.

Problem solved.

Glad others find this change in behaviour annoying as well.

I don't manage my music collection in iTunes, I only manage the music I sync to the iPhone, which means it's not too much effort to correct it at the moment.

But we'll see what future updates do to the behaviour.
