After reading those answers, I think Apple is either lying, or trying to hide the truth. It's quite obvious to developers that the list expands longer than what they have for both AppStore rules, and the list of apps that were denied. I feel like writing the FCC a letter to fully explain what really goes on, as that is obviously not it.

I don't know what people expected Apple to say, they had to spin their response in the most favorable way.

These sorts of things are never about being upstanding and who's the most honest, it's all about CYA.

I was surprised and pleased that Apple (unlike AT&T and Google) are actually being semi-open about this by bothering to post up their response on their own website.

Anyone interested in looking at AT&T and Google's response, they're all up on Engadget now.

Curiously, Google redacted the question about the reasons given by Apple for Google Voice's rejection, and for the "wronged party in all this" as Engadget writes, Google's response was pretty short.

John Gruber just published his analysis too.

The one part that struck me as outright crap was the following:

"In addition, the iPhone user’s entire Contacts database is transferred to Google’s servers, and we have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways. These factors present several new issues and questions to us that we are still pondering at this time."

Anyone who has been using their Google Account's ActiveSync knows this is total crap, because their entire contact list lives on Google's servers already.

Not only that, but what about the syncing of Google contacts built into address book and the 'Contacts' pane of your iPhone in iTunes?

That part is just plain wrong.

Was there an option to selectively transfer (i.e., some or none) of the iPhone Contacts database to Google when using Google Voice?

If so, I'd imagine that would have put GV on an equal footing with established Apple<-->Google Contacts sync'ing. If not, then the fix would appear to be straightforward.

Can't understand all the hype, Apple created the iPhone, it created the OS that went on it, surely that gives them every right, to choose what it thinks is appropiate to put on it's device?

AT&T still ruin the fun for the rest of us. 3G streaming? Nope, because they have to prevent abusers of their 'unlimited' data plans, while we over here get raped per MB for our data so why can't we do whatever we want to do with it?

I wonder what'd happen if Skype made a 3G capable app but only submitted for a few countries outside of the US - would it get approved?

Yep Apple has every right to run their dictatorship... er business, anyway they wish ;p

Ultimately Apple loves locking things down and controlling everything and that's understandable i guess, as they want to "try" to control the end user experience.

I love Apple tech *style and form*, but hate the controlling their OS. Hence I jailbreak and am happy. Google Voice showed up on Cydia after right after it was rejected ;p

I knew Apple were lying about this one. When Apple rejects apps for having some UI element slightly out of place, they would obviously reject an app that copies their Phone application's features. Hopefully we'll see the Google Voice application in the coming weeks on the App Store, and a change of App Store rules and policies about how the App Store approves apps.

Yes, there was an email sent around by Apple regarding a new App Store Resource Centre portal, and yes, the portal exists, but it is by no means new information, just a collection of bits and pieces from around the Apple website in one place.

Ummm... so we didn't actually buy the device(iPhone) from Apple/Carriers when we paid money to buy it outright or over a 24 month period??? So its still Apple's device even if we pay good money to buy it?</Sarcasm>

More Evidence That Apple Really Did Reject Google Voice

This isn't going to end well...
