Stumbled across this great iPhone app via Gizmodo, linked through from Gruber. Prowl uses the iPhone push notification system to alert you of Growl events on your Mac. This essentially opens up the push notification system to anything, without needing a specific application on your iPhone.
Right now I've just configured it to set push out DM's I receive on Tweetie. A friend of mine talked about getting Transmission to notify him when a torrent completes downloading. I could even see myself set up a dedicated MSN account for friends and family members to send me messages without needed to pay for SMS. Obviously this is only a one-way thing, however it is a very nice development and well worth the $3.99. I'll be using this app solidly over the next week and writing a full review for MacTalk in the near future. Check out Prowl here. Screenshot: ![]() |

Yeah - it's pretty cool.
Of course, I'd much prefer the iPhone Apps themselves have Push Notifications (COME ON ITWEETREPLY), but this'll have to do for the moment

If the computer is off, Growl isn't running and neither are the apps, so they can't trigger notifications to be sent to your phone. It's basically a way to monitor things happening on your Mac at home, while you're out and about.

The thing is that with me at least i don't own a desktop... making this app a little useless..
I admire the idea but at the rate laptops are overtaking desktops it seems a little bit outdated. That's my two cents.

i am definitely buying this app ... it looks great. i can be downloading via transmission and not having to check whether my download has finished. Anything that means i don't have to be in close proximity to my computer = win ... you may not be able to send commands but ... maybe mac app developers will release small iphone apps to send commands, which would make this even cooler ...

Set this up for growl notifications from my desktop+laptop when the machine's been >5 minutes idle.
I imagine it'll be an interesting balance tweaking priorities so i don't get notifications i don't care (enough) about being pushed. |

Anyone thought of some cool ways to use this...
would love some ideas other than for Adium and Transmission.
