Default iPhone OS 3.0 - backup takes longer this time

I just noticed this morning when I plug in my iPhone running 3.0 GM to my macbook and sync it with iTunes, the backup took longer this time, almost the same as when the iPhone 3G was first released. After 10 minutes, the backup status bar is not even half way, usually it only takes a few minutes. Take note that I only have 8GB of data on my 16GB iPhone. Has anyone having this issue?

Mine's been very speedy. Did you guys do a fresh DFU mode restore, or maybe an upgrade? I restored and did not restore my backup, so started like a fresh iphone. I'd never done this so I imagine I got rid of a lot of crap that had built up over the course of almost a year.

Only the first time you install 3.0 will the backup take this long.

DFU install, no reloading of the backup.

That hasn't been my experience.

mine does it every now and again. Apple changed the way backups happen I think in 2.2, where it stopped doing a full backup every time [full backups take ages] and was doing "incremental" backups instead, with full backups every now and again.

My experience with 3.0 is that the full backups are happening more often than in 2.2, but still not every time.

Same issue here, every so often a backup takes longer than others do

Backups seem fine on mine, although this support article suggests if you have lots of photos it can slow down your back up times:

iPhone: Improve backup and restore times by reducing iPhone Camera Roll

Might be worth a try.

Anyone have an errors when they synced there 3.0 GM iPhone? I just recieved one, accidently push enter when the error code came up, but I thought it said iTunes could not see the iPhone and some weird error. Not the usual ones in Apple's Support KB's. It restarted the iPhone and then worked fine.. Didn't lose any data. Strange but though I should report.

On Virgin as well

What I don't get is why you can't do something like a ppf backup. Like when I used to mod halo maps instead of sending the new 80-200mb files i created a ppf which would mark the changes between them and make a file that would patch the original. So as long as you have the original it just backs up the differences. Lol I'm not doing very well as describing tonight but hopefully someone gets what I'm talking about

Backups are taking ages - 30-40min and only 15% completed!!!???

I have two phones to backup and when connected to iTunes both of the phones change ALL text to Polish (even the names of the apps)!!
Anybody else seeing this?

...I'm in the "backups now take AGES" camp.

Pls fix, Apple.

Interesting.

My initial backup after installing 3.0 *was* taking ages... Then I got a call so took it off the dock without finishing (less than half done).

Tried it again a little later and it just flew. Took less than three minutes.

It's almost intermittent - like it's doing full backups in favour of incremental ones like it did with 2.x, just like harrisonx said a couple of posts ago...

I tried this, but it didn't seem to solve this problem...

Current backup going for 2+ hours. I'll let you know when it finishes, (if) it does.

that seems rather excessive - even with the encryption turned on mine took a few minutes, and that's for just under 10Gb of stuff, and that was even for the first time with encryption on.

Seems to have stalled here:

Click the image to open in full size.

Which is where it stalled last time...

Apple discussion here:
Apple - Support - Discussions - iphone 3.0 Update + Slow Backup Process ...

EDIT: Hmm, it does still seem to be writing files to the backup directory... I'll leave it going for a bit, and let you know how it goes

EDIT2: Aaaaand we're done. Backup size is 375MB. Took a while, but we got there. Hopefully subsequent backups don't take this long, epic suckage if they did.
