I do not think that it is that expencive when the misses asked me the other day what i thought it was going to cost i said that it would be close to the 150 mark so 60-80 is quite cheep.

Just in case you need some inspiration, or a laugh when using the Tom Tom, coming soon to Tom Tom (hopefully the iPhone version too) is The Simpsons...

the jail braking community should have fun with the new gps --- we might see things better and badder then TomTom

Indeed

I've got it operating on my iPhone and my first impressions are exceptionally positive. Very professional interface, very clear and precise voice, huge amount of POI, Points Of Interest, full map including NZ, automatic night/day colours, vertical and horizontal layouts, 2D & 3D maps, signposts etc

Accuracy appears spot on and destinations are routed quickly and seemingly thoughtfully.

So far in has renewed life into my iPhone

GPS navigation is big business. The maps alone would costs thousands to license. I highly doubt a greasy 13yr old in his parent's basement is going to be coming out with anything to compete against established software/GPS companies.

As for the likelihood of an established company releasing an app for JailBroken (only) iPhones? It seems hardly likely. It'd be like Adobe releasing CS5 only for 'Hackintosh' Macs. It's not gonna happen.

Yet, there are open source routable maps on the net. Just not sure if it's available for all major cities.

Which software package have you got that includes NZ? Sygic?

I'm off to Auckland in a couple of weeks.... could be very handy.

Meh, once you've heard Eddie Izzard and/or John Cleese telling you where to drive, nothing else compares.

I'd buy a TomTom just for Izzard

I'd give my left nipple for Stephen Fry doing his best butler voice for a GPS.

"Sir should be turning left shortly. I agree sir, very inconvenient."

Robert Llewellyn & Chris Barrie (from Red Dwarf) discussed the RD characters making GPS instruction voice-sets on Car Pool. I'd give both of toholio's nipples for that!

I was just looking at this and read a comment that speedcams don't show up. Have you noticed this?

Is this worth it? I much prefer a TomTom nav app. But this is something I do not want to pay for yearly subscriptions...or pay for another region if I go travelling (if possible).

EDIT: Just checked out the TomTom iPhone site...I really like the dock! I hope it eventually comes out in Australia with free updates (wishful thinking I know)

Likewise. I'm going to wait. I currently use a Mio which has its own dock which charges the device, the tomtom one is very neatly setup, and this is what has finally convinced me.

I said I'm going to wait but now I've decided to buy Sygic. I don't even see iPhone version on TomTom's web site now, and the lack of public feedback makes me wonder if it is still working on it or had quitely abandonedbthe project.

TomTom for iPhone

They have stated it will be out later this year, I'm sure there'll be a bunch of info closer to release.

Why would they go to the effort of creating not only an application, but an accessory dock as well, taking part in the keynote and generating all this hype, and then kill the project? Makes no sense. You're just being impatient.
