They can be done either way, but all apps must be purchased through the App Store - whether that's on the iPhone or via iTunes. Apps, like Music sync back and forth between your iPhone and your home iTunes account if you've purchased something on the other device.

At least you had the presence of mind to mention it to those with tech knowledge before purchasing a new phone.... unlike my mother.

I'd recommend holding off a little while if you can. While there will always be new tech around the corner, if there's a tradition of releasing a new product at a certain time, it's worth waiting to get the most bang for your buck.

I am holding off until the new model arrives, however, I was wondering, can the apps that I have already purchased for my current iPod touch be synced across to my iPhone when I purchase it?

As long as it's from the same iTunes account, yes.

Up to 5 Touch devices I believe.

It is widely believed to be announced at WWDC, 8-10 June. Note that announced doesn't mean released. Watch this space, really.

Nope, you can sync apps to an unlimited number of iPods/iPhones, just like the DRM'ed music.

Well, you can authorise protected content - movies, apps and music bought before March 2009 - for up to 5 computers (that don't share your iTunes account), and every one of those can sync it to any number of devices (i.e. devices that sync to the respective computer's iTunes lib).

Cheers
Steffen.

i recommend the Zagg Shields. You don't even realise its on there most of the time, and it stops all those nasty scratches.
