Default MLB At Bat error

The MLB At Bat app was about the first one I downloaded on day of release but since then have been unable to watch the videos that come with it. (well except for one occasion, see below).

This is the error message I get: http://flopearedmule.net/mlberror.jpg

I first thought it might be a contents rights issue (ie, not available outside US and other specific markets) so I contacted MLB mobile support and they confirmed I should be able to see them in Australia. They said they would look into the error and respond but haven't yet (been more than a week.)

I have uninstalled and re-installed the app and reset the phone.

I went to the Genius Bar yesterday and ... the video worked on the Apple Store wifi. OK, but I've checked with a mate in the US who has it and it works for him over the regular connection and nothing I've read about it suggests it can only be access over wifi (a la iTunes). Actually I found US forum postings where people were specifically talking about accessing it in both 3G and wifi. So I've still got the problem of that error. Unfortunately my allocated genius didn't know much about the iPhone and couldn't help.

Any ideas?

Can't help you specifically, but you've done the right thing by contacting the mlb directly.

It could be that the combined latency of US-->Australia and 3G speed might be throwing an issue up that the programmers haven't counted on. These sorts of error screens are often a response to time-out calls within the program that would have timings decided on based on US testing. So you might be stuck with needing to use Wifi in Aus through the app, or hope that the 3G speed is very good every time.

They have possibly the best (or second best behind essendonfc.com.au) sports website in the world. They really know what they're doing and I'm sure they'll be interested to try and find out why you're getting the error.

Oh... and go the BoSox!

Thanks. I just noticed that the actuall app store page for MLB actually says it will "pplay video encoded for either EDGE/3G or Wi-Fi bitrates." So I don't see any reason why it would be lagging so badly, I'm getting good speeds and do everything else without trouble on 3G.

Hopefully they will get back to me ... eventually.
