Default Internet Question

I apologise if this is a stupid question, but after thinking I knew the answer and didn't need to ask, I'm now confused as my answer seems wrong.

I was in the belief that I could access the net via 3G and I still believe that's correct - is that right?

Reason I ask is that I'm unable to with only 3G turned on and with EDGE off. If I turn EDGE on along with 3G then I have net access. If I turn 3G off with EDGE on, I don't get the EDGE icon showing, I get the GPRS icon showing on the phone.

So have I confused myself or should I be getting net access via 3G alone or should I be turning EDGE on at the same time as 3G when I want to surf?

iPhone is locked but using Yellowsn0w software unlock so not sure if that is part of the reason EDGE I'm confused and have net access with phone account,

Have I confused myself?

Is this something to deal with Jailbreaking? Because as far as I'm aware you can only turn 3G on/off and don't have any control over EDGE.

Also the reason you'll only connect to GRPS with EDGE turned on is probably because you're not with Telstra, and therefore can't get EDGE.

Thanks NR that does explain it better to me then, although still a little confused then when I do turn EDGE on I get net access, but when off I don't.

Oh and BTW not with Telstra although the phone is locked to them, but using the software unlock, so maybe something to do with the jailbreak, not sure.

I've never actually tried disabling "just EDGE" - but I did an experiment just now using an iPhone 3G with 2.2.1 firmware, using BossPrefs, and I had no problem running in "3G-only" mode.

However, I don't have Yellowsn0w on my unit - so that might be the cause of the problems.

Make sure you are running Yellowsn0w 0.97 on your iPhone. There are known side-affects with earlier versions that may be what you're experiencing.
