Default iPhone 3G losing podcasts & songs

My iPhone 3G keeps losing podcasts, songs and videos. I have had to restore my iPhone about 10 times in the past 2 weeks to fix the issue. The media becomes not recognised at random. It is not while the iPhone is syncing, it happens during the day while the iPhone is disconnected from my Macbook Pro.
At times, I have been able to solve the problem by resetting the settings, but most of the time I have to restore it to fix it. When I connect it to iTunes, iTunes can see that the media is still there, but I sync it and the iPhone still cannot see the media until I perform a restore.
All the while, the applications are still there.

I am at the point where I think there is something faulty with my device. Has anyone heard of this happening? I am considering taking it to Optus to see if they can send it to Apple for an exchange.

Thanks,
Jodi

My iPhone has been restoring since before I wrote that post....and it has been sitting in the one part of the restore, near the end, for most of that time. Could the memory chip be bad?
