Scanner recommendations? Photo negatives and prints + documents

My parents scanner died in the arse today after close to 10 years of service (CanonN650U).

They need a new one to replace it and I figure it may as well be one that can handle scanning negatives as they have many photos they should scan in before the house inevitably floods or catches fire.

Anyone got any recommendations? Cheaper the better

Under 1k my advice is

1. Combined flatbead/film scanner - Epson 4490($319) or Epson V700($619) from CPL. I have the Epson 3200 for my large format negatives.

Positives - can scan strips of film+documents. Negatives - low true resolution(1200dpi) and poor shadow detail.

2. Dedicated film scanner - any of the nikon range but they use SCSI which can be a pain with mac.
