Question Wireless N modem / router - Is it worth it?

Recently got a new 08 MacBook Pro

At the moment- got an internode ADSL 2+ connection hooked up to a Billion BiPAC 7402VGO.

Have got that hooked up to a PS3, Beyonwiz & DNS323 via ethernet- and access the net via wireless on my MPB.

Would there be a noticeable difference if I got a wireless router with wireless N? Like the Billion 7300N? Or should I hold off?

You'll most probably notice a difference with the Wireless N router as the MBP uses Wireless N hardware..

So I'd get the router.

i have billion 7402NX modem

the main use of wireless N was streaming movies from my MBP to AppleTv and i can see a noticeable difference in transferring files using wireless N than G

It depends whether you want to transfer files between your devices or access the web.

A wireless N router (probably) won't make a difference to download speeds if you get a good signal because 802.11g gets 54mbps, well above ADSL2+'s maximum of 24mbps. (EDIT - hold down Option while clicking the wireless icon to determine what speed you're connecting at; if it's above 24mbps don't bother)

If, on the other hand, you want to swap lots of large files between devices on your network wirelessly, then you'll get a considerable benefit going to an 802.11n router.

Will mainly use it for wireless internet to my MBP.

I do use it to transfer files from the MPB to my NAS (which is hard patched to the router) but I do this only a few times a week.

While it does go a bit slow- not sure if soley warrants the purchase (if I dont see a substantial increase in browsing / download speed)??

I have the Airport extreme and i wirelessly stream media to my apple tv and other laptop in the house... an N router is essential for this, Mostly due to the fact the i have a 2 story house and the range is much better from an N router

N router is the way to go, future proof you wireless router.
Plus it's a much more stable connection I've found and your mbp device supports it, not all laptops do.

Think its worth dumping the extra coin on the 7402NX compared to the 7300N? Dont think any of my devices have gigabit network speeds. LazyDesi, how have you found it?

I found that the N standard can be iffy unless you can run in the 5mhz band totally, as if you use the 2.4 mhz band you still get massive interference even on "N", so I bought a gigabit switch (most devices use gigabit) and problem solved,
The other problem is manufactures know we all want more speed so charge accordingly, decent wireless "N" routers are expensive, although the Airport Express base station is one of the best but only 3 ethernet ports, with one taken from the ADSL modem.
the trials of being an early adopter.
Sorry for the ramble.

I did quite a lot of research when upgrading from my crappy dlink g router, the aebs is easily the best bang for your buck with n speeds gigabit ethernet, sure it only has 3 ethernet ports but i personally can survive that atm.

The Airdisk option to make any usb drive NAT storage is unbeatable, i have 3TB of storage now on my network for Media and backups including TIme Machine which works amazing well on an airdisk with only the occasional hiccup (usually because i shut the laptop half way through a backup.

Hi
I have a white 24 inch , 2.1 Ghz 2 MB Ram (upgraded from one MB) , An Apple TV (160 GB bought a week ago) , an apple I pod Touch and an Iphone (on its way)

Currently I have a Dlink ADSL2, Modem and Wireless in one G604T - 2 years old.

I want to upgrade the Dlink to a new Modem and Wireless Router in One Combo (same as the current Dlink) but with 802.11N capability to connect everything wirelessly.

The current Modem is BRILLIANT. But I want to upgrade to 802.11 N

What is the best item to get?

The iPhone and iPod Touch won't work with n wireless.

Hence you will need a modem that does both at the same time (not sure if that's poss?). Or run two routers, one for your n and one for your b/g.

Nothing, because you'll still fall back to G speeds. One device on your network using G = all devices must use G.

It is possible to run two networks (using two routers) to ensure you maintain your n speeds.

mixed mode sucks, things always end up going as fast as the slowest part of the chain. i use two routers - one for G and one for N - both in differnet frequencies (2.4 and 5ghz) so they don't interfere. I use N for the media streaming and other devices that can use it, and G for the G devices.
