I erase data off USB/SD cards, but it's still there?

Lately I've been having this problem (in fact I've had it for a while now, and never bothered to fix it) where I put something on any form of USB drive or SD Card (such a micro SD card from my phone connected via USB) and if I delet it later, the file itself is gone, but when I check 'Get Info' the space is still taken (eg a 400MB file is added, 600MB remaining. Delete the 400MB file, still 600MB remaining). For USB drives I usually fix this by reformatting the drive through Disk Utility which helps, but MicroSD cards take a while to transfer 2GBs and I'm tired of always reformatting.

Anyone know why this is happening?

And if you do that, be careful that you don't delete (empty) anything already in the Trash from the Mac.

I deleted some stuff off my USB and it was plugged into my gf's MBA.
I emptied Trash. Boom. Deleted her stuff too (in her MBA Trash). She was not happy.

Huh, why would she have stuff she didn't want deleted sitting in the trash?

Yeah. Crazy huh?

She deletes stuff but it's like a temporary storage area. Actually she just hoards stuff there 'just in case' she needs to refer to them. I went out and bought her a HDD for Time Machine.
