Wi Fi

Hey all,

I just ordered a brand new Macbook and seeing I will now be portable I would love to set up a home wireless network. I have had no experience with wireless networks as I have always used Ethernet cabling.

What is required? I am currently on Bigpond Cable which comes into the modem then to a Ethernet hub which is then distributed to all the computers and Xbox 360 within the house. Do I need to buy the airport base station and simply plug it into a spare slot on the hub? Will that work or is there more to it?

Thanks for listening to a complete novice.

Just buy an AirPort Express and plug it in like you said. Will give you a nice fast wireless connection for your MacBook. The AirPorts are really easy to setup, even I could do it!

Ok will do MacTime. So just plug it into one of the Ethernet ports and set it up? I imagine you can password protect the network.

Yep, it's got all the standard network security features, really simple. You can also use it to stream music wirelessly or share a printer. Great value for such a compact device.

Setting up Wi Fi really is that easy. I have a Bigpond connection and thats all I did. Except I used a netgear router. Your Mac will prompt you for all the info. Name the network and give it a password and its done.

^ Same here, but have also set mine up with a Billion wireless modem/router.

Works a treat for both. So much easier than a Windows network.
