Suggestions for replacement mouse

So, my old faithful Logitech MX1000 mouse is finally starting to die.

The middle click on the scrolly wheel is starting to fail more and more.

I use Steermouse, but the mouse has always felt a tiny bit sluggish in OS X compared to razor sharp in Windows (using Fusion). Played around with Steermouse settings, but could never get it "quite" right.

Time to pick some brains...

I am looking for a replacement wireless mouse.

What is everyone using, are you using Steermouse (or not), how accurate/natural does your mouse feel under OS X (and Windows if you are using a VM or Boot Camping).

Best Logitech Mouse

Steermouse is a must if using Logitech mice as their software is pretty bloated, also it does make your mouse feel more responsive under OS X (haven't tried it under VM or BootCamp)

edit: do some searching as well. for example have a look at this page.

I'm using the Logitech MX Air mouse with an MBP. This mouse not only works on a flat surface like any other laser mouse, it also works in the air like a laser pointer. Working in the air is a bit weird at first but you get used to it and its really good for when sitting in front of the idiot box (not Windows, the other idiot box) and you dont want to lean over the notebook just to find something simple. The other strange thing is it has an electronic scroll wheel which if you drag your finger over the sensing area too fast the pages just fly by - again something that you get used to. These features are really strange when you go to work the next day and have to convert back to a primitive crappy el cheapo mouse that work supplies under he who's cheapest wins.

The Air mouse is rechargeable with a pretty good charge span but I do turn it off each night so it lasts about a week between charges. Don't know how it would go for intense game play though.

Whatever you do install Steermouse. It works. DO NOT INSTALL LOGITECH CONTROL CENTRE. It is an evil application and will cause you no end of grief. It didn't even recognize my Logitech mouse and locked up my computer.

Thanks guys,

I have an MX Revolution at work, I will take it home at see how that performs on OS X with Steermouse. If it is OK, I will buy another mouse for my work pc.

Logitech Control Centre - yuck - have never installed it - never will.

MarkW - checked out the air mouse - bit pricey for me as I would not use the "air" functionality - good idea though for HTPC's.

Just hooked up the MX Revolution at home under Steermouse.

The mouse seems a bit heavier and more stable (I don't seem to be overshooting like I was on the MX1000) but time will tell.

Only thing, I can't find how to disable the scrolly wheel ratchet - I would prefer it free-wheel.

I have a MX620. I chose it because I hated having a dock hanging around and liked that I could just replace the batteries. I've had it for about a month and it's still going strong with the pair of Duracells that came with it. It's RF so there's no noticeable mouse lag (which I could notice with an MX1000). It has a nice feature where a switch at the bottom changes the scroll from a normal one to free spinning.

I also don't have any issues with LCC. It worked fine with both my V470 and the MX620. Though Steermouse would be good too.

I'll add another vote for the MX Revolution. It's very comfortable, works on ANY surface and is very accurate.

Just click the wheel itself, that changes it from ratchet to scroll. Mine is a little sensitive and I can actually change it by accident at times.

I have tried clicking the wheel (like a mouse button), but it stays in the ratchet mode. If I spin it quickly it will briefly disengaged the clutch and free wheel, but it then reverts back to ratchet mode.

By memory when I used this mouse on a pc, this was the default configuration. You had to use the LCC to reprogram the wheel to stay in free wheel mode by dropping its clutch.

FYI, on the VX Revolution there's a physical switch on the underside that engages/disengages the ratchet. It's not too much smaller than the MX.

Hmm, I only use it on my PC but will plug it into my MB and see if it changes how it works.

Well I just plugged it into my MB and it worked perfectly. (Funny how Windows pops up a message saying it's installing drivers etc and OS X just works! As a switched I am still amazed by the little things!)

Pressing down on the wheel changes between ratchet and smooth scrolling. All functions worked and I didn't install any software. This was the first time the mouse has been used on my MB.

I can only assume there is an issue with your mouse? Are you able to return it to test another?

I have had it for quite a while so the warranty will be expired.

How long do you press down on the wheel before it drops the clutch?
